AHS Seahawk Welcome Back Newsletter
Anacortes High School, August 2020
AHS Mission and Vision
Our Mission
To empower all students to be successful, confident and passionate in a changing world
Our Vision
By encouraging positive relationships, honoring student voice and supporting individual excellence
From AHS Principal Fox
I am confident our school year will bring successes, challenges, struggles, and celebrations for our students and staff. Healthy social emotional development and academic success are our goals this year and always. Strong partnerships with families help ensure this success.
This school year we will work together to ensure consistent student attendance, engagement in learning, high expectations for learning, and positive school experiences. Of course, this year will look different than ever before and still we are commited to each students' success.
Our teachers and staff have been busy revising student schedules for our hybrid program and preparing courses for a great remote learning experience. Students' schedules will remain largely the same as what they registered for in the spring. Any changes will be made with students' Spring requests and graduation requirements in mind. Students will pick up their schedules on September 11th at Seahawk Startup.
Please review the following important information with your family and student. It includes Seahawk Startup, Freshmen & New Student Orientation, Open House, news from our PTSA, and more.
I am excited and honored for the opportunity to be your principal this year. Contact us with any questions or concerns throughout the year. On behalf of our entire staff, we welcome you back to school.
From ASD@Home Principal Ryan Pike
As an Anacortes School District student, you are able to participate in all Anacortes High School activities and events. Students will need to review the AHS Student Handbook and electronically sign all the forms that will be sent to you in an email from AHS.

Counselor Conferences
Counselors will be very busy in the first few weeks rescheduling students into the Hybrid and ASD@Home models, and registering new students. Please wait until the week of October 5th to request an appointment with them unless you have a situation requiring immediate attention. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we start this new school year together.
Class Schedules & Teacher Requests
During this unique year, we are creating two separate master schedules for all students - AHS Hybrid and ASD@Home. Counselors ensure that students are scheduled into required courses aligned with AHS graduation requirements. We greatly appreciate your patience and grace as we work hard to set your students’ classes up successfully for this school year.
Due to scheduling conflicts that occur every year with master schedules and selective offerings, students may not receive their first choice of classes – specifically with regards to electives. Teacher requests are not allowed. If you have a question or concern with your student’s schedule, please contact their counselor.
Update Your Information with the Registrar
In order for us to make sure you receive timely and important information, we need to have accurate contact information. Have you moved, changed email address, changed jobs, changed emergency contact numbers and not notified the school? Please make sure you contact our registrar Carol Kirkpatrick at ckirkpatrick@asd103.org with any pertinent updates regarding your student’s information. If there is ever an emergency and we need to contact you, accurate information is a must. Also, if you’ve temporarily used a PO Box, we need your permanent street address for our records.

Required Summer Reading
What Is Schoology?
Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online, provide a safe forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects, and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized and it keeps the class connected. A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:
- The classes your child is enrolled in.
- Your child’s upcoming assignments.
- School and class announcements.
- Daily grades. Final grades can still be found in Skyward.
Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Learning
Synchronous Learning: This happens in real time, like during a Zoom meeting, and is delivered at a specific time. This type of learning is best for interaction between teachers and students and among students- questions and answers, discussion, student feedback, teacher assessment of learning, and building classroom community.
Asynchronous Learning: This is all the other activities in a remote learning course that students can complete on their own, in smaller groups, or with individual teacher support. The content is provided to students and they access it on their own and sometimes when they choose. This type of learning is best for independent practice, small group work, individual support from teachers, projects, reading and writing. It can be more self-paced, include choice activities, and involve more student ownership of learning.
Shell Fun Run
Every year the Anacortes Schools Foundation and Shell Puget Sound Refinery partner up and host the Shell Fueling Education Fun Run, and though the race is going virtual this year, the Anacortes School District Grant Competition is back! The school with the highest percentage of their staff and student body that participate in this race will receive $5,000 to benefit that school. All ASD students, teachers, and administrative staff are eligible to participate.
In addition to the ASD Grant Competition, all registrants will be entered to win one of three amazing participation prizes and will have the opportunity to enter any of the weekly Photo Challenges! All proceeds from registration, sponsorship, and donations will help support COVID-19 related needs for Anacortes students this school year, so tell your family and friends too! #ShellFunRun2020
Register at databarevents.com/fuelingeducation. Open Registration will be available August 25-September 30. Register, then run or walk 2+ miles ANYWHERE, ANY TIME during the month of September!
Don't miss out on this amazing opportunity to help our school win $5,000, raise much needed COVID-19 relief funding for all Anacortes students, get a super cool t-shirt and be entered to win fabulous prizes! For more information about the Shell Fun Run, visit asfkids.org/funrun.
