## News and Events at Freedom Middle School - Week of 11/4/19

Freedom teachers are look forward to meeting with you and your student to discuss their progress through the first quarter of the school year!

• Teachers will meet with families on a first come, first served basis. They will do their best to be thorough but efficient with each family, and thank you in advance for your patience. Keep in mind that conferences end at 7:30 PM on Thursday and 3:00 PM on Friday, so plan to be here by 7:15 PM on Thursday and 2:45 PM on Friday at the latest to ensure you will be able to meet.
• We are planning to have families meet primarily with their student's Excel teacher. If you would like to meet with your student's other teachers, know that this will also only be available on a first come, first served basis. If you are unable to meet with your student's other teachers at conferences, you can find their contact information on the school's website.

6th grade is close to finishing up our 2nd unit of the year. We are learning all about the number system. This has included placing numbers in order on a number line, thinking about how we use negative numbers in the real world, and graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Students have also learned about multiple solutions to a problem or scenario, also known as inequalities. Some were even able to come up with their own scenarios to fit the inequality.

We were very excited to spend some time with students and families at the FMS Family Math Night this month on October 17th. We had a full house and gave out lots of fun raffle prizes. We were also proud to recognize many 6th graders for their excellence in mathematics at this event. Our next unit we will begin learning about ratios.

7th grade mathematics students are just finishing up our unit on rational numbers arithmetic. Students learned how we can use positive and negative numbers to represent money, distance between two objects, and how they can use these numbers to represent different situations in real life. Specifically, we discussed how rational numbers can represent money situations such as bank statements, credit statements and lending/borrowing. We are excited to begin starting our new unit on proportions and we can’t wait to see your students grow and learn new things.
