Evidence of Student Learning
The CCPS Instructional Model is based on the gradual release model: I do, we do, you do. A critical component of this model is evidence of student learning in relation to grade level standards. Student work and performance on assigned tasks and assessments are the key indicators to determine whether students are on track towards mastery and/or working at the appropriate level of rigor required by the standards.
English Language Arts
Curriculum Guide Highlight
Grade 6 Focus
As students work with the grade-appropriate texts, "Animal Wisdom" and "The Last Wolf", they will analyze the use of figurative language and the impact specific word choice has on overall tone. Interactive whiteboard lessons and Level Up tutorials to support this analysis are provided in the “Teacher Resources” page of the CCPS module.
Grade 7 Focus
When reading the magazine article "Magic and the Brain" as part of an analysis of various types of informational text structures, students will investigate how text structure contributes to the development of ideas. Videos demonstrating several text structures are provided in the CCPS module.
Grade 8 Focus
As students begin part two of the investigation of the horror genre, "Scary Tales", they will focus on the impact of an author’s point of view and how the author responds to conflicting evidence or viewpoints. Titles of Level Up tutorials to support this investigation are provided in the “Teacher Resources” page of the CCPS module.

Science
8th Grade Science
As we teach and learn in a variety of instructional models, we need to remember the importance of collaboration. To grapple with science content, students need to be talking about concepts with each other and participating in hands-on activities and labs.
Also, science notebooks are an effective brain-based strategy for retention of information. Writing down information helps students remember that information.
CANVAS Module Q2 Highlights
5E Model Lessons: Acids and bases are a great hands-on lab that can be done with blended classes, with in-class students testing the liquids with pH paper and showing students at home what the color changes look like. This is an essential skill in reading a pH scale as well as understanding the differences between acids and bases.

CTE Celebrates Computer Science Education Week December 7 – 13, 2020
Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. See more stats by clicking the link below:

Many CTE students participate in Hour of Code during this special week. Computer Science Education Week is held every year in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper. Click the link below for more information about the Admiral:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper
The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. Physical Education or Physical Activity? (There is a difference!)
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY (PA) can be structured or unstructured play or practice and helps us to meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Anyone can facilitate PA as it does not require specific skills and knowledge to participate and requires little to no feedback. PA may or may not help students meet and master standards/goals. PA is commonly used to get kids “moving” and is seen in Open Gym, running clubs, brain breaks, recess, etc.
Quality Physical Education FOCUS 4:
- DAILY INTEGRATION OF 14 REQUIRED STANDARDS/BENCHMARKS for planning, instruction and assessment for determining the skills and knowledge needed for building health and physical literacy.
- STANDARDS-BASED PERFORMANCE SCALES UTILIZED FOR PROGRESS MONITORING by both students and teachers to identify targets to be learned, practiced, assessed, retaught, etc. (Scales provided)
- STANDARDS-BASED/GRADE LEVEL APPROPRIATE ASSESSMENTS IN FOCUS with 4 graded categories equally weighted: Movement Competency, Cognitive Abilities, Lifetime Fitness, and Responsible Behaviors and Values that contain assessments and assignments that are grade-level evidence of mastering or progress towards mastery of required learning of standards, benchmarks, goals, and targets
- HIGH EXPECTATIONS, STRONG INSTRUCTION, AND DEEP ENGAGEMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS TO BUILD PHYSICAL LITERACY

Digital Innovation Best Practices
Canvas:
- Page History allows you to easily go back to previous versions of the page. You can view the page history of specific pages by selecting “View Page History” on each page. (click the 3 dots on the upper right of the page). Canvas keeps a detailed log of who and what was changed. And users are able to revert to a previous version of the page.
Oops! I didn’t mean to delete that! We’ve all had a incident of accidentally deleting or losing work, but with this nifty trick you can see a log of deleted items, which might prove to be a course saver. Here’s the fix! If you add “/undelete” to the end of your course’s URL, you can view the last 25 deleted items from your course site.
- Did you know that you have digital inking tools right on your Surface Book that allow you to use your finger on the touch screen or stylus to write on a whiteboard, markup documents, sketch diagrams and annotate text as you are sharing your screen with your students through WebEx or projected to your classroom whiteboard? Watch this quick video to see how easy it is to use these great tools. VIDEO
- Connect to your Surface Book to the protector through the WiDi – Directions
- When instructing virtually or in a blended model use multiple monitors to allow you to share your screen in WebEx and instruct from one monitor while monitoring your students on the second monitor
Office 365 Whiteboard
Office 365 has a whiteboard students can use to collaborate with each other. You can use it in the way you use traditional white boards. You can also share your whiteboard with students and project it if you want to see whole class participation.
- Looking for a quick and easy way to engage virtual and in-person students? Try https://jamboard.google.com/
- Use it to have students respond on virtual sticky notes to teacher-created questions. Click here for ideas of how to use Jamboard in the classroom. https://ditchthattextbook.com/jamboard/
