Cedar Grove Friday Flash
May 27, 2022
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Last Friday, all children took part in making a wall of handprints outside of the cafeteria as a way of creating a sense of ownership and community. The picture above shows the end result, and it looks amazing! Many thanks to our SGA students for the idea, to Steve Oedemann, SGA sponsor for organizing school-wide participation, and to Sonal Purohit for painting students' hands and directing the areas on the wall where handprints could be placed.
As you are aware, today, we had severe weather alerts, including tornado warnings. Once the first warning was received, students were immediately brought to the safe zones in the school building and were sheltered until the warning was lifted to a watch. Shortly after students returned to classes or to lunch in the cafeteria, a second tornado warning was issued by the weather service, and we went back into the safe zones. We were very proud of the children for moving quietly into the severe weather safe areas; they waited for the next direction and followed the procedures we practice in drills each year to prepare for events such as this. All staff were on hand to help alleviate any fears or concerns. Your children did a fantastic job and are to be commended for following the safety protocols we have in place.
Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Sandi Garcy, who was nominated and selected as the MCPS Elementary English Language Development Educator of the Year for the 2021-2022 school year. We are so thankful for the dedication and support that Mrs. Garcy provides to our students and their families each day, and we are lucky to have her as a member of the Cedar Grove family. The award was presented to Mrs. Garcy on Wednesday morning in the presence of Cedar Grove staff, Mrs. Garcy's family, and staff from our central office. Congratulations, Mrs. Garcy!
As we are nearing the last several weeks of school, there are some reminders below:
- The end of the year due date for all media materials checked out to students is June 3rd. Please be sure your child/children return anything that was borrowed from the media center.
- If you have a child participating in any intervention or tutoring groups, whether virtual or in-person, all sessions will be ending on June 3rd.
- Students should not be bringing any toys to school. Please help us ensure that items from home stay at home.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr. Derby and Mrs. German

June Media Monthly
We are coming into a wonderful month - June holds so much promise - and that includes very exciting things happening in the media center to prepare our students for their well-earned summer break. Please bookmark the June, July, August Media Monthly, as it will be updated every Friday and often during the summer!
Media Summer Message #1!
Although this is rather incredible, it is time for Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Hirschhorn to prepare the media center for the summer. The first step is to get all of our student library books back into the library. Our end of the year due date this year for media materials checked out to students is June 3. We will be sending home media notices this coming week, so please look for that and help your child find and return their books. Thank you for your support in this endeavor!
