Types of Mining and Fracking

Francine Okraski and Ashton Roess

What is Fracking?

The process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gases.

How is Fracking done?

Process of down into the Earth, a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals, is directed at the rocks at high pressures to fracture the shale rocks to release the natural gas inside.

Fracking's effects on the enviornment

  • Contamination of groundwater.
  • Methane pollution and its impact on climate change.
  • Air pollution impacts.
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals.
  • Blowouts due to gas explosion.
  • Waste disposal.
  • Large volume water use in water-deficient regions.
  • Fracking-induced earthquakes.
