A Note from the Principal
The Hixson administration wants you to know that we take threats to our students, staff, and community very seriously. The safety of our students is a top priority. What transpired this week is very disappointing and hurtful on so many levels. Throughout these last three weeks of school, we will spend time helping our students and staff heal from this unfortunate incident. On Wednesday afternoon, I shared a message over the intercom with students and staff during Statesmen Time. The message was also shared with virtual teachers so that they could share it with their Statesmen Time group. The essence of that message is captured in this statement, "if you see or hear something, say something." This is one way we can work together as a school community to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Although this has been a very challenging week, there are several positive things that occurred that are worth mentioning. For example, teachers, principals, and nurses were celebrated for their appreciation days. It was so nice to see the smiles on their faces as they enjoyed their treats and praise this week. It was all so well deserved.
I would like to say HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all mothers who are a part of the Hixson community. I have a three year old, and she has taught us so much about the unconditional love and giving of self that comes with being a parent. I am looking forward to celebrating with my family this weekend, and I truly hope you are able to do the same.
Finally, I would like to thank all of the Hixson families who have shared positive words with our admin team and our staff in these very challenging times. Thank you to those who offer words of encouragement and positivity as we greet each other in the morning in the drop off line. Thank you for all the waves and smiles. Your support means so much to us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Mayes
P.S. - Here's a small bouquet of peonies for all Hixson moms! These are my favorite flowers! Thank you Mrs. Hudson (Hixson German teacher) for sharing these beauties from your garden!

Freestyle Pool Passes!
Dear Families,
In February, the Webster Groves City Council made a significant change to the Aquatic Center’s admission policy --they removed the requirement that non-Webster Groves residents could only access the pool if they had a Webster Groves sponsor. Now, everyone (regardless of residency) can access the pool and there is a resident and non-resident daily admission rate. In support of creating a consciously inclusive community, Webster Rock Hill Ministries, The Alliance for Interracial Dignity, and the Webster Groves School District have joined together to create the Freestyle Pool Pass. The Freestyle Pool Pass strives to remove barriers to the community swimming pool by providing free daily passes for individuals and families (WG residents and non-residents) who require financial assistance. A special “thanks” to our community members who believe in this initiative because we have reached our fundraising goal of $10,000. The pool will open on May 29, 2021, and additional passes will be available (as long as funds are available) at the Recreation Complex front desk this summer.
To those families who may currently be in need of financial support to access the pool, our goal (pending funding) is to provide:
- WGSD PreK – 6th grade students: 4 Freestyle Pool Passes per student upon request
- WGSD 7th – 12th grade students: 2 Freestyle Pool Passes per student upon request
- If you have more than one child attending the same WGSD school, then you will receive a family pack of Freestyle Pool Passes.
If you currently are in need of financial assistance and are interested in receiving Freestyle Pool Passes (each is good for one daily admission), then please complete this FORM by May 14, 2021, or call your child’s counselor (Mrs. Bodi, Ms. Blanks, or Dr. Peterson). The passes will be given to your child May 24 – 26, 2021.
We look forward to seeing you at the pool this summer!
Sincerely,
Dr. Shane Williamson, WGSD

Save the Date - New Student Orientation
Sustainability Class at Hixson!
It is not too late to enroll in Hixson's new Sustainability class for next year! This is an exciting opportunity for our students to explore how to make our world a better place by taking care of our environment and taking care of each other. Students enrolled in this class will help create our community garden, learn how to grow fruits and vegetables, take care of the garden, and be empowered to design creative solutions to complex problems such as food deserts and food insecurity in our community. This is a chance to engage our students in real world, hands on learning experiences.
