Democratic Nominees for President, Continued
Tulsi Gabbard
On January 11, Representative Tulsi Gabbard announced her campaign to run for president. She is the incumbent Representative from Hawaii second district. She is a member of the Army National Guard. As a member of the Army National Guard she served in the Iraq War, yet she is strictly anti-war. While she has served in the House of Representatives she has tackled topics such as airport security, child abuse, and military sexual trauma.
More recently, she has served as the Democratic National Convention Vice Chair. She stepped down in 2016 in order to advocate for candidate Bernie Sanders. Her main platforms are improving healthcare, creating peace, and reforming the criminal justice system. She is not one of the most well-known candidates but she could easily get there.
Opinions
The Wall
Some of us may have heard about Donald Trump wanting to build a wall in between the United States and Mexico. In my opinion, I don't think that is necessary because the people that migrate just come to the United States to live a better life and to start over. This would also cost a lot of money for Donald Trump to get out of our defense account. I also think Donald Trump is acting like a king and we separated from England to have our own country. Donald Trump is acting on his own without Congress. Some people think building a wall is necessary in this situation; they would say they \want to be separated with Mexico so no more immigrants come to the United States.
We Need a Trip to Perfect North
by Sam C.
Second Street School should go on a skiing, snowboarding, and tubing field trip at Perfect North Slopes right before or after winter break.
Perfect North is an extremely fun snow sports site where you will find plenty of snow at Perfect North Slopes even when there is none in your backyard.
I went to Perfect North Slopes recently and had a blast because of the thrill of going down 1,200’ slopes. Perfect North Slopes has 25 snow tubing lanes and about 20 ski/snowboarding slopes.
A two-hour pass for tubing is $22 for kids 12-, people 60+, and active military while general admission is $27. Snowboarding/skiing passes are $42 for kids 12-, people 60+, and active military while general admission is $52. There are many more reasons why but those are a few reasons why Second Street School should go to Perfect North Slopes.
SSS Needs a 6 Period Day
Most schools have 6 periods in a school day. Second Street only has 3 plus your extension. Eighth graders also don't have science as one of our blocks. We’re in each class for two hours. That's a very long time. I disagree with this schedule. As a student I know each class takes forever to end. Sometimes I dread to go to class because the period is so long. Watching the clock doesn't help either. Not only that, some teachers don't know how to occupy the time they have. For an example, the teacher teaching gets everything off her bucket list but we still have an hour left. There's nothing to do except online curriculum practices or you could do homework. A variety of students get bored and tired just doing this. Another thing is that we do not have science as a class. Science is a very big part of our education. We can't just skip a whole subject. Missing science in middle school is going to hurt us in our future such as high school. Yes, Second Street is a great school but it could be even better if they switch to a different schedule!

Book Review: Keeper of the Lost Cities: Books 1-7
by Rebecca V.
Keeper of the Lost Cities, by Shannon Messenger, is a book geared towards middle-grade students. There are currently seven books in the series, with two more to come: Keeper of the Lost Cities; Exile; Everblaze; Neverseen; Lodestar; Nightfall; and Flashback.
The series chronicles the journey of a twelve-year-old girl, Sophie Foster, whose world is turned upside down when she learns that she’s not human. She is, in fact, an elf planted in the human world by a top-secret organization (I promise, it’s not as dumb as it sounds!) In the first book, Sophie learns her true identity and moves to the Elvin world. Just as she’s beginning to adjust, she finds herself kidnapped by another evil organization, who we later learn are called the Neverseen. Eventually, Sophie’s rescued by the organization that planted her in the human world, The Black Swan.
I know that it sounds dumb, but really, the first four books in this series are incredible. If you enjoy reading fantasy books then I would recommend these, but you should be prepared for fluff. Lots and lots of fluff. However, once the series reaches the fifth book, the plot evaporates and the series rolls along tiredly. For example, in Flashback (the latest book) there is a battle scene within the first one-hundred pages. However, they spend the next three-hundred pages (the book itself is nearly 900!) sitting in a room recovering. For me, the series has lost its appeal and just seems to be continuing extremely slowly.
That said, the plot behind the series is interesting. Sophie eventually joins the organization that planted her with the humans and begins to learn more about her “mission.” She is supposedly one day supposed to be able to take down the Neverseen and fix the many injustices in the Elvin world. Also, there are extremely sparkly flying unicorns (called Alicorns). Additionally, one of Sophie’s friends (won’t tell you who!) joins the Neverseen in an extremely crazy turn of events.
Overall, I enjoyed the first few books in the series and, with a few books still to be written, I believe that there is plenty of time for the series to turn around. If you’re interested in sci-fi adventure fantasy type books, I would definitely recommend the Keeper of the Lost Cities series.

"Brace for Impact"
by Jack G. and Eli C.
The gravity field was incorrect. The ship was reeled in like a fish on a hook to the planet. The planet was not supposed to be their landing stop. Red lights beamed on the walls. Alarms blared at loud pitches hurting Gage’s ears. He scrambled around the spaceships as gravity was enforced. The ship was starting to increase in speed. Gage climbed the ladder toward the pod. Edvin was already in and rushing him to the small container that would save them.
Gage put the multiple seat belts on.
“Let’s go!” Edvin yelled as Gage shut the pod door. Edwin pressed multiple buttons and the pod soared through the atmosphere. Then they were crashing into the ground. Gage couldn’t see anything and the impact had rattled him, and hurt his arm. He looked over to Edwin who had blacked out in the impact. The window in front of them only showed dirt. He clicked on a flashlight and put his suit on in the tiny space. When he opened the door he stepped onto the sandy ground. When He looked around he saw trees and water. It was like Earth, except the trees were purple and the ocean was green.

Frontal Lobe: The Sanity Keeper
by Campbell S.
When most people think of the brain, they just think of this pink thing sitting inside your head. What most people don’t realize is that there is more than that to your brain. The brain can be split into three major parts, the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. In the forebrain, there is a large part of the brain called the frontal lobe. This part of the brain is very important when it comes to who and how a person is.
One of the most famous cases of frontal lobe damage is the case of Phineas Gage. Gage was the foreman of a crew cutting a railroad bed in Cavendish, Vermont. In 1848, while Gage was using a tamping iron to pack the explosive powder into a hole, the powder exploded. The iron rode, 43 inches long and weighing 13.25 pounds, shot upwards penetrating Gage’s cheek, ripping through this brain, and shot out from his skull. The iron landed several feet away from Gage. The rod went through Gage’s frontal lobe and blinded him in his left eye. Phineas’ survival made him somewhat of a celebrity to neuroscientists because he was found to be the first link between brain trauma and personality change. His friend and comrades started to call him “no longer Gage.” Phineas started to run around and curse without any remorse for the people around him. In May of 1860, Phineas Gage died at the age of 36 after a series of seizures.
Review: The Masked Singer
There has recently been a new show raising to fame and that is often on the trending page. This show is called ‘Masked Singer”. It is a show where a celebrity is masked and they sing a famous song and the panelists try to guess who it is. No one knows who is under the mask until they are of course unmasked at the end of the episode if the end up with the least amount of votes. I wait for this show to come on every week. I try my hardest to guess who the masked singers are and sometimes I am very shocked about who gets unmasked at the end. This show may not seem that interesting and may seem silly, but you would be shocked by how good it really is. This show is often times very funny when the panelists try to think hard about who could be under the mask during the clue videos every week. Sometimes they guess people spot on and other times they are way off and it is hilarious. The celebrities keep up their acts very well and it is honestly a great show to watch. I would suggest this show to anyone and it gets a very well deserved 5/5 from me. Mrs. Gilbert agrees!
Tokyo Fashion 2017
by Lucy S.
There are three specific styles I found while looking up “Tokyo fashion”. I found a certain video that helped me more than I thought it would. The video link can be found below, I got a Tokyo Makeover- Safiya Nygaard. She tried the three styles that were mostly noticed in the Tokyo streets. The styles were Mode, Layering, and Vintage-plus.
The mode style. This style is all about black and white. You try to find straight-down dresses and (if you have them) try to hide your curves. Some people add hats or blazers to this look and it is known for the black color. The gist of the Mode fashion trend is straight-down and no color. The picture is shown below-
The next style I am showing you is the Layering look. This look is, just like the name said, layering as much as possible. Also, in the look, you’re supposed to find the wackiest patterns, if you have a signature color you wear, then you try to incorporate that in the look. The layering look is all about colors and (of course) layers! The picture shown below is of a girl names Rin-Rin. She’s an Instagram model from Tokyo and she was in the video I watched. Here’s her look-
The final style I’ll be discussing is Vintage-plus. The ‘plus’ part is because they add little snippets of things throughout the look. For instance, the look Safiya wore is they added (in her words) “bat wings” to a Nike shirt. The look doesn’t have any specific color, but there aren’t usually a bunch of accessories. Some people add extra layers to make that ‘plus’ more ‘plus’. The picture shown below is an example of one-
All of these looks were iconic in Tokyo, Japan, 2017. All of these pictures came from google images and the only source I have is from the video listed in the introduction. Wait for my next article about the NYC fashion week!

Sam's Football Corner
***Disclaimer: These are my opinions. This article is extremely controversial and opinionated. Please do NOT get offended by any of my remarks.
News:
Colin Kaepernick has come to an agreement. Both parties have not leaked any specific details yet but some sources are saying he might be coming back to the NFL. The former San Francisco 49ers’ Quarterback was kicked out of the NFL for kneeling during the National Anthem. NFL media got the answer to why he was doing this in a media conference. Kaepernick said “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
My Opinions:
I honestly do not think that the NFL should have kicked Colin Kaepernick out. He was just standing up for what he believed in. The Bill of Rights by former President James Madison said that all Americans have the freedom of petition. While I somewhat disagree with Kaepernick's actions, it was his first amendment right. I love the NFL but when it comes to rare situations like this, the ultimate decision will be made based off of PR. I will continue to watch NFL games but I don’t think that either side did what was right. I do agree with Colin Kaepernick's opinion, yet I don't think he protested in a very nice way.
Game Review: Apex Legends
by Anthony P.
Apex Legends is a good game. I would give it a 9/10. The reason I would give it this review is that Apex Legends is a free game and it is a battle royale. In the game, you collect weapons, armor, and other things you progress in the game by getting kills. There are multiple “Legends” that you can play as and they have different abilities like one has smoke grenades and one has a healing device. I would recommend this game also it is free.A Billion Dollars

Advice from Miss Knows a Lot and Miss Helping Hands
Dear Miss Knows-A-Lot,
I am having trouble speaking my mind and telling people how I feel. Please help me!
Dear Anonymous,
I understand what it is like having trouble speaking your mind. I have been through something like that before. I used to be conflicted about speaking my mind, but I finally realized that it is a good thing to speak my mind. Speaking your mind may be hard but just remember that speaking your mind helps you when you get older. Do not let people overlook you and be sure to be seen. When you get older you are allowed to do many things like vote and let your voice be heard. If you start speaking your mind now it will be much easier to do when you get that age.
Sincerely,
Miss Knows-A-Lot
