Safety Net?
As we are learning methods and techniques about preparing for Retirement & College I couldn't help but wonder, at what point should you cut them(your kids) loose?
Throughout my history some of my best learned lessons have come from failure, along with, trial and error. I felt my parents provided a bit of a safety net, but ultimately I had to take care of myself.
So what does this have to do with school? Actually a lot!
For years in the classroom I felt as though I enabled some of my students. Not only would I lead them to water, but I'd then hold the cup for them. Then came one significant stretch of time in the classroom where I decided to NOT be more exhausted than my students. I still remember saying to a colleague, at the end of the school day, who should be more tired? I received a strange look. My follow up question was, don't you think the person doing the most work should be the most fatigued? To which I received a nod of the head.
My point is this, just as I must help my 15 year be prepared for life, teachers must cut the chord and allow for more discovery, exploration, inquiry and ultimately learning through failure.
I often reflect on my classroom days and one thing stands out, I did way too much for my students. I know I enabled way too often. I know I was the hardest worker in the room on most days. If I could go back I would definitely create more independent learning opportunities.
Now for the real issue at hand, how do I get my fifteen year old to see the value in getting a job? This parenting thing is not easy.
