Planning Guide for Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention for Texas Schools
Texas Suicide Safer Schools Roadmap is intended to be used as a planning guide for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention by Texas school districts.
This Roadmap provides public health information based on best practices for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. It is recommended that each Element be used in the order presented, to ensure a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention planning.
Helping Your Loved One Who is Suicidal: A Guide for Family and Friends
New Resource for Young Children, “Gizmo’s Pawesome Guide to Mental Health©”
This program promotes positive mental health habits and trusted adult connections for elementary-aged children. Staff and volunteers will lead in-person or virtual Read-Alongs of the illustrated Gizmo’s Pawesome Guide to Mental Health©, highlighting a small dog, Gizmo, who shares a big message for mental health and hope. Gizmo guides the reader through the importance of mental health, how everyone has it, what you can do to take care of it, how to recognize when your mental health needs support, what you can do to help yourself first, and how to connect with trusted adults when you need help from others.

Parents and Gun Safety: Keep 'Em Safe, Texas!
Practicing safe gun storage protects our kids, prevents accidents, and keeps our guns out of the hands of criminals. The Texas Department of Public Safety, through its awareness campaign, KEEP ’EM SAFE, TEXAS, provides posters, flyers, and videos to help educate parents about how to safely store firearms.
Visit the KEEP ’EM SAFE, TEXAS website to download materials in English and Spanish to share with parents and your community. Help spread the word about safe gun storage and keep fellow Texans safe.
Digital Forum on Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention
For this upcoming Digital Forum on Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention we will focus on Health and Well-being, June 2 – 4, DHS’s Office for Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention will feature mental and behavioral health practitioners that make up the local public health models used to prevent violent extremism and individuals radicalizing to violence by helping to define and share strategies that incorporate not just law enforcement and government, but social services, mental and behavioral health services, career and education services, and civil society organizations to evaluate, address, and mitigate concerns through education, health services, social engagement, development, intervention models, and the use of technology.
Who can attend: local mental and behavioral health practitioners, social service providers, civil society organizations, school district administrators and educators, health services, career services, law enforcement agencies, state, local, tribal, and territorial governments, U.S. government partners, private sector partners, technology companies, and anyone else that has an interest in and could benefit from attending the event.

CPR/Health Updates
CPR Instruction Requirement and Physical Fitness Assessment FAQ
TEA has developed a frequently asked questions (FAQ) document to address questions regarding the CPR instruction and the physical fitness assessment requirements during the current school year. Health Education and Physical Education TEKS Adopted by the State Board of Education
At the November 2020 State Board of Education (SBOE) meeting, the SBOE approved for second reading and final adoption revisions to the K-12 health education and physical education Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The revisions for health education and physical education include new standards for kindergarten–grade 8, three new high school courses for health education, and three new high school courses for physical education.
The new health education and physical education TEKS will be effective on August 1, 2022 and will be implemented in classrooms beginning with the 2022-2023 school year.

Safety Audits
September 2020 - August 2023 - Public schools should conduct a safety audit of facilities
September 2019 - August 2021 - Charter Schools should conduct a safety audit
District Audit Reports
At the end of the Safety Audit process, schools will be required to submit a District Audit Report to Texas School Safety Center.
August 2023 Public schools expected deadline.
August 2022 Charter Schools expected deadline.
Emergency Operation Plans and Annexes
Can be requested at any time by Texas School Safety Center.
