THE FRIDAY FORECAST

THE WEEK OF JANUARY 25 - JANUARY 29, 2021

Welcome to our 2021 Virtual Showcase at Walnut High School!

Although we would much rather meet you in person, we are pleased to welcome you to our Virtual Showcase. We hope that the information you find throughout our Showcase website will help give you a glimpse into all of the pathways, programs, activities, and support systems we offer at Walnut High School

We wanted to make our Virtual Showcase interactive, fun, and informative for you and your child. Start off by clicking on our Academics button as our Grade Level Coordinators give a brief presentation for each grade level. After that, start to explore the different opportunities we offer for our students. We want all of our students to feel connected and find the right fit that helps them explore their passions, interests, and academic goals as they navigate through High School.

Our Virtual Showcase link is active for the entire school year, but we recommend you sit down with your child tonight or during the weekend to watch presentations that they are interested in as they prepare to choose classes in the Spring.

PSAT Cancelled - Still opportunity for National Merit Scholarship

After much thought and consideration, the decision has been made to cancel the January 26th administration of the PSAT/NMSQT. While it is our desire to provide this opportunity for our students, the health and safety of both students and staff are of paramount importance. Out of an abundance of caution, and in alignment with current recommendations from the Los Angeles County Health Department, it has been determined that it is not a safe option to administer the exam on campus at this time.

Unfortunately, there are no other dates for the PSAT/NMSQT this year; However, students interested in qualifying for the National Merit Scholarship may still do so through an alternate method.

To qualify, students will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Take an official administration of the SAT between August 2020 and June 2021
  2. Request that the College Board SAT Program send an official report of their SAT scores to NMSC (code 0085)
  3. Complete the Alternate Entry Form.

Students will not be considered in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program unless they complete the Alternate Entry Form no later than Thursday, April 1, 2021.

Students who are interested in preparing for the SAT can do so for free via Khan Academy practice sessions on College Board’s website. Students may also visit the Walnut High School front office from 12:30 pm to 3 pm to pick up a study guide.

We understand that the cancellation of the PSAT/NMSQT is one of many frustrating aspects of living through this pandemic. Please know that the decision was made with the best interest of our students and staff in mind. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this unprecedented time.

E-Mail GLC Sonia Nunez - snunez@wvusd.org if you have any questions regarding the PSAT.

Join our Academic Design Program (ADP) | Learn by doing

The Academic Design Program (ADP) is a standards-based, integrated approach to learning. Using the Design-Based Learning methodology, Math, Social Science, and English are brought together as the students work through real-world problems in search of real-world solutions.

Program Benefits

  • Meets A-G requirements (i.e., college or university prep)
  • Small learning community--class sizes smaller than average
  • ADP classes are scheduled for up to three periods a day, allowing students to participate in a full selection of electives and other activities for the remainder of the school day
  • Chromebooks, desktop computers, and iPads using word processing, design, photo, movie, music
  • One, two, and three-year program participation options
  • Opportunity for involvement through ADP Council and classroom leadership

The Academic Design Program emphasizes the 5 C's of Common Core:

  • Creativity: students design original solutions to multidimensional problems; they build 3-dimensional objects and structures
  • Collaboration: students work in teams, sharing ideas and drawing conclusions from the interactions; work-based learning experiences are built in to Challenges through the year
  • Critical Thinking: all solutions to problems must be "never before seen" and apply the concepts of core academic subjects
  • Communication: students have informal class discussions and reflections of the curriculum verbally and/or in writing; they present solutions live, in class or via other multi-media resources
  • Citizenship: students are in work groups throughout the year and have rights, privileges and responsibilities within those groups as well as across the program

Student CLASSROOM Expectations

  • Teachers will be taking attendance everyday. Students will need to keep their cameras for attendance, participation, and checking for understanding. Teachers will let students know if they can turn off their camera during certain times in the class.
  • Students are not allowed to record without teacher permission.
  • New legislation (AB 77) states that if a student is absent 3 days in the week, the parent will be contacted to support the student to re-engage with Distance Learning.
  • Normal grading policy begins the first day of school. Teachers will cover their grading policy in their syllabus as well as in their Back to School Night presentation.
  • More information regarding Distance Behavioral Expectations is located below .

WVUSD Distance Learning Behavioral Expectations for Students

Students at all levels are now engaging in Distance Learning. To ensure a positive, productive and enjoyable learning experience for all participants, it is important that all students and parents/guardians adhere to these Distance Learning Expectations, which include online behaviors for students and privacy guidelines for parents.

ATTENDANCE COUNTS!

Please remember that attendance counts, every period, every day. Students will be marked absent if they are not on camera at the beginning of each period to verify their attendance.

If your student is having difficulty logging in, please contact your teacher immediately, and remember to clear their attendance by the end of the day.

All single period absences will need to be reconciled through the attendance office by the student. If marked absent, students will receive an email from the attendance office notifying them that they have been marked absent. The notification will include the date and period of the absence. The student will need to contact the Attendance Department to make any necessary corrections to their individual period attendance. For full-day absences, a parent/guardian must contact the attendance office by the end of the day.

We are so happy to see all of our students online and learning. They are working hard and making us proud. Keep up the great work!
