A Message from the Leadership Team
As mentioned last week. WIOA which provides over $700,000 in funding to our adult education programs requires that adult education, workforce development, and postsecondary education partners work together to design and implement a key strategy in career pathways: Integrated Education and Training (IET).
So what exactly is IET and how does that impact us?
As we finalize the grants the focus is around WIOA and IET. IET is an approach that provides adult education activities concurrently and contextually with workforce preparation activities. Last week we had the opportunity to sit with our local workforce development board and come up with a plan where they would fund eligible participants to be co-enrolled in ESOL or GED while at the same time in a technical training program creating an accelerated learning model. Now that is WIOA at its best!
What about those participants that may not be eligible to be co-enrolled?
For those participants that may not be eligible to be co-enrolled we will be focusing on incorporating occupational clusters in the area of Healthcare, Industrial Technology, Office Technology and Service Industry. These occupational clusters will focus on language, math and reading skills needed to be successful in those industries. These occupational clusters will also hone in on the soft skills local employers are requesting. Upon completing an occupational cluster, students would have acquired the basic language skills required in that industry, as well as earned a basic industry certification such as the Basic Life Support certification or the Microsoft Office Specialist certification that would support students entering the industry or transitioning into technical training.
When will this begin?
We have already started. The best thing to do is expose our students to the possibilities that exist. See below: Upcoming Event – Tour LWTC. These are truly great times to be in adult education!

Now that we know the basics, let's move on to Buying a home.
This week let's look at LESSON 1: Are you ready?
Community Resources
Community organizations are a great place to find helpful resources, places that can help us with sometimes difficult situations. Community organizations depend on volunteers to help provide those resources. ONE of the very real ways to become part of a community is to become a volunteer within that community. You interact, speak and assist those living in your own backyard. Volunteering is a great way to practice our skills and also can be a great way to look for future employment.
This week, let's take a look at Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc. moves people in need toward self-sufficiency. In the 2015-2016 fiscal year, 40,759 people were served by Catholic Charities in Southwest Florida. A representative from Catholic Charities will be visiting Lorenzo Walker Technical College this Friday, April 21st in Mustang Alley from 11:00 AM to Noon.
ESOL Teacher Resources
Due to schedules changing, the recommended pacing guide is going to be off. No worries, just communicate with your partner to make sure you are covering the necessary materials. You should be somewhere close to or around Unit 8. You will not be able to finish the entire book this semester, which is fine. Summer session will cover the last few units. We will start fresh again from the beginning in August!
In case you missed last week's:
Here are some activities for you to look through to use with your students! Some you can incorporate now, while others are good to store on your "back burner!"
