National Merit Finalists
Each fall over 1.5 million high school students take the PSAT/NMSQT. Of these students, 50,000 will qualify for program recognition. In early September about a third of the 50,000 high scorers were notified that they qualified as Semifinalists—the highest scoring participants in the nation. McKinney High School was honored to have two students named National Merit Semifinalists.
This week, Semifinalists who met academic and other requirements were notified that they advanced to become National Merit Finalists. We are pleased to honor our two National Merit Finalists, Evan Varghese and Alec Weigel.
Interact Club
Below are the qualifications to even be nominated and the MHS Interact Club met all of them, was nominated and the Rotary International president issued the citation. Rotary International has over 1.2 million adult members (and many more if the college and high school clubs were included). To get this citation is a big deal.
The qualifications to be nominated:
- Participate in an activity that promotes international understanding.
- Introduce your members to other Rotary opportunities for young leaders, such as RYLA or Rotary Youth Exchange.
- Participate in an event to build awareness of, or to raise funds for the polio eradication campaign.
- Submit a video for the Interact Video Contest.
- Participate in a school or community service project or fundraiser that supports one of Rotary's areas of focus.
- Plan and carry out a service project for Global Youth Service Day.
- Participate in a career day or mentoring activity.
- Connect graduating Interactors with a university- or community-based Rotaract club so they can maintain their Rotary connection. Work with your sponsor Rotary club to contact Rotary clubs in your area.

FREE CLASSES
In the effort to collaborate with and serve parents with students of all ages, the MISD Guidance and Counseling Department presents the MISD P.O.W.E.R. Parenting spring series that runs from February through May. The spring schedule serves up FREE resources for parents in the form of seminars and ongoing classes that touch on timely parenting topics. In an effort to accommodate parent schedules, a variety of options are available, including daytime, evening, weekend and webinar events. Kicking off next week on Feb. 5, is the MISD P.O.W.E.R. Beginning in February and running through April, the Parenting Teens Series offers stand-alone seminars on topics such as vaping and juuling, adolescent depression, teens and social media and teen anxiety. In March and May, webinars cover the topics of stress management and adjusting to the summer routine. There are more great resources scheduled throughout the spring, and you can find information about all of them by clicking the links below. The classes are free but the webinars require registration.
