WHS STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Jennifer Richey
Born: San Jose, California (Raised in Camas)
Education: University of Portland
Why did you become a teacher? To inspire students to be lifelong learners and to excite students about mathematics.
What is your favorite book? Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
Person who had the most impact on you: My mom, who has always been there to support me in chasing my dream.
Share a little-known fact about you: I have proven something unique in mathematics, specifically in mathematical representations of ecological systems.
Inspiring Quote: “We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and the depth of our answers.” Carl Sagan
Principal Moment: On Friday, I walked by Jen's room and saw her sitting at her desk during her prep dressed like Albert Einstein. I decided to find out what exactly she was up to. Jen shared with me that Friday was a STEM day. She wanted to share her appreciation/love for mathematics with her students which included talking about famous scientists/mathematicians, like Carl Sagan and Albert Einstein, how math is the language of the universe, etc. She shared with me at the conclusion of the day, "Today was a huge success. All of my students were so excited by the end of the class, it was truly inspiring!!"

Fall Smarter Balanced Testing - Math and ELA (Last Week)
Student Preparation: Practice Tests - The best way to prepare students for success on the SBA is through the regular instruction in the classroom that is aligned with the new Washington state standards. In addition to the aligned classroom curriculum, teachers will provide time for students to go through a training test to become familiar with the online test format. Parents and students have access to sets of questions aligned to the new Washington state standards. Each practice test has about 30 questions as well as an answer key. You will find the practice tests at the following link:http://wa.portal.airast.org/training-tests/.
Score Reports - Students receive a score (a number between 2000 and 3000) and an achievement level (1, 2, 3 or 4). A score is based on the student’s performance on the test. This score is then converted to an achievement level based on grade level expectations. Students who get an achievement level of 3 or 4 are considered on target to be college- and career-ready by the end of 12th grade. Sample score reports are available. If a student took a Smarter Balanced assessment last spring, a score report should have been received in the mail this fall.
Panther Problem - Juuling
Students who are either caught vaping or in possession of will be disciplined according to our discipline policies/practices. Parents/guardians will be informed by an administrator. Students in possession of a nicotine-delivering device at school are violating a Washougal CIty Ordinance and can be fined $250. We are asking all staff to continue to keep enforcing our hall pass expectations as well as be looking for Juul devices attached to Chromebooks.
Parent Advisory Council
The Washougal High School Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is comprised of parents who want to know more about the inner workings of Washougal High School. The PAC meets nearly once a month to discuss issues of importance to the entire school community and is a representative body that provides the perspective of parents to the WHS administration through regular communication with the principal. The PAC also serves to provide parent feedback on school policies and procedures and has a role in the development and implementation of the WHS School Action Plan. If there are issues parents want to discuss at a PAC meeting, they should contact Aaron Hansen, Principal, ataaron.hansen@washougalsd.org or 360-954-3101. We will be meeting on Tuesday, Noveber 20 starting at 6:00 pm in the WHS commons.
