Happy Holidays!
Goodbye 2015 and Hello 2016!
Simple ways to prepare your home for a Florida winter...
Change Your Filters- Every season change is a great time to change air filters in your home. In the winter, you absolutely want to change your filter before you turn on that heater for the first time. A new air filter can help keep your home warmer and also help save some money when it comes to your electric bill.
Pest Control- When it gets cold outside, insects and pests tend to want to be inside and warm, just like you! This is a great time to have your yard and outside of the home treated. Spray around all of your doors and windows, as well as the entire base of the house.
Replace Weather Stripping and Repair Caulking Gaps- This is another way you can reduce the cost of your electric bill in the winter (and summer). Carefully inspect all weather stripping around the doors in your home where a cold draft could breeze in. The same goes for caulking around windows. Over time, it can wear away or create gaps in the caulking causing unnecessary cold air to come in. Caulking gaps around your window can also allow water to get into the gaps and cause rotting around your windows.
Chimney/Fireplace Inspection- If you have a working chimney, it should be inspected every year. A wood burning fireplace can cause Creosote (a mixture of tar and soot) to build up on the interior walls of the chimney and can easily start a fire inside the chimney. It is very important to make sure it is in working order and have it cleaned if necessary.
Keep Your Pool Maintained- Although you may not be using your pool in the winter time as much, it still needs to be cared for. Since the rainfall decreases significantly upon the winter months, it is important to keep a check on your water level. The circulation pump should run between 4 and 6 hours to keep algae from building up.
Prepping Your Lawn- Your last fertilizer treatment should happen between September and October. This will help your grass to remain 'fed' through the hibernation of winter and any hard freezes it may be subjected to. Be sure to rake all leaves from your lawn, if they are left for the winter they can become wet and soggy from morning dew or rain and create a blanket on your lawn that can suffocate the grass and breed fungal diseases.
All of these preparations can be easily done yourself and save money and time in the long run. If you need assistance "winterizing" your home or lawn or just don't have the time, Encompass Property Maintenance would be happy to lend a hand!
