Welcome a New Staff Member to Spencer
Hello, my name is Kaitlyn McKay and I recently started my position as a building substitute at Spencer Elementary. I am an Eastern Michigan University graduate with a bachelor's in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I grew up in the Livonia area, but will soon be moving to Hartland. When looking at school districts in Livingston County, Brighton immediately caught my attention and felt like the best fit for me. The staff and students that I have had the pleasure of meeting so far have been unbelievably kind and welcoming. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone at Spencer and continue growing my skills as an educator.
Kindness Week
February: A Month of Kindness
"Pawsitive words": Kindness, Caring, Compassion
"Pawsitive" action ideas for you and your children:
- Random act of kindness - February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day. Perhaps try to do one random act of kindness per week this month.
- 12 hugs a day for a month - According to therapist Virginia Satir, humans need 12 hugs a day for growth. This is best done within the household during the COVID era, but hugs may be more important than ever in this time of isolation.
- Offer patience, a smile, say please and thank you...all of the little things that may help to fill another person's tank.

COVID Communication
In an attempt to NOT over-communicate to all families at Spencer with emails regarding positive Covid 19 cases, BAS is no longer sending community-wide emails to all parents and guardians for each case, at each building.
We ARE, of course, still sending emails to ALL students, parents, and staff facing mandated quarantines and ALL parents, students, and staff who have been in classrooms where a positive Covid 19 case has been reported.
This week at Spencer, we had 0 new cases. Some students may be under precautionary quarantines that are unrelated to the school district. Families of those directly impacted have already received direct communication regarding any new cases this week. If you have any questions regarding COVID-19, please feel free to visit our district's COVID-19 transparency site at https://www.brightonk12.com/Page/8729"
In addition, the Livingston County Health Department is no longer receiving the reports of positive COVID-19 tests of adults between the ages of 19-64 from the testing sites. For this reason, they are requesting that our parent/guardians self-report if they have tested positive or exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 to allow for the necessary contact-tracing within our school. You will find the link to the to the COVID-19 Self-Reporting Form below...
PTO News
STEAM Night is typically held in February. Due to Covid-19, we are exploring virtual options for this. We plan to create a Padlet (or similar) platform for students who would like to participate to upload a video of their science project. In addition, we are looking into virtual STEAM options through AA Hands on Museum or another venue. Stay tuned...
March is Reading Month! We generally host Book Bingo this month. That event will be cancelled as well, but we are planning an around town scavenger hunt. This event will be open to all Spencer families (including BVA). If you participate, your student(s) will receive a free book from the PTO. More details to come...
Our annual auction and carnival planning usually begins this time of year. This event will not be held in person this year. We have decided, as a board, not to ask local businesses for donations this year. We do, however, have a few items that were donated before last March’s shut down. We are looking into virtual auction opportunities for these items.
We are moving forward with the sun shades for the playground! Three locations have been identified for placement. We have secured a quote and are proceeding to obtain School Board approval.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Counselor Corner! Welcome to February, families! Here we are again with another month and another lesson topic for classrooms. We will be visiting students to talk about Empathy and standing in the shoes of others. By looking at multiple perspectives, we can gain a better understanding of how our actions impact others and the world around us. We will discuss how others feel and where they are coming from. This provides a way to learn what we can do to help our family, friends, and peers when they need us most. Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school. More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!
