Megan M. H. Brown

School Library Intern

GREETINGS TRINITY EPISCOPAL SCHOOL FACULTY & STAFF

I would like to take a moment to introduce myself to all of you. For the next nine weeks I will be completing an internship/practicum in the school library with Ms. McCarthy. I have really enjoyed meeting many of you over the last two weeks, and I hope this digital flyer provides you with a better idea of who I am.

WHY AN INTERNSHIP?

I am in the process of completing an online graduate program in Library and Information Science through the University of South Carolina. My concentration is in school library media, and I hope to pursue work as a school librarian after graduating in December. As a requirement of my program, I must gain practical experience through two internships. I finished my first internship last spring at a primary school in North Carolina. For my second internship, I will focus on working with middle school grades while at Trinity Episcopal School.

I'M HERE TO HELP!

During my internship, I hope to gain experience not only in the school library but also in collaborating with teachers to integrate 21st-century skills into core curriculum content. I will practice promoting reading to students through mini-programs, booktalks, displays, and other strategies. Additionally, I aim to provide general support in the library and school to aid in students' learning experiences. In particular, I can help faculty in the following ways:

  • collaborate on a unit or lesson to integrate information literacy skills
  • create helpful teaching materials or resource aids (such as pathfinders, tutorials, or web-quests)
  • create or assist with media for an event
  • assist with reading promotion

MY WORK

Take a moment to check out some of my work samples from my graduate courses as well as my first internship. If you would like to talk about the possibility of using similar tools in your instruction, please let me know so we can discuss how I can assist you.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MY ROOTS!

I am originally from Shenandoah County, Virginia and attended James Madison University (Harrisonburg, Virginia) for my undergraduate degree in media arts and design. After graduating I worked as a production assistant on two motion pictures (War of the Worlds and Evan Almighty) and also as an administrative assistant in the Film Studies Department at UNC Wilmington. Currently, I am a full time student and live in Algiers with my husband, Sam (a Coast Guard helicopter pilot) and our black Labrador retriever, Abby. My husband and I just recently moved to New Orleans from North Carolina and are truly enjoying this area so far. However, if you have suggestions on places to explore, please let me know!

MY INTERESTS

My professional interests include media literacy, reluctant readers, media ethics and copyright law, children and young adult literature, and narrative writing. Outside of school and professional work, I enjoy playing guitar, writing songs, DIY projects, watching movies, cooking, spending time with my family, and entertaining my dog.

CONTACT ME!

My schedule in the school library is not consistent throughout the internship, as some weeks I will be working on Tuesday and Thursday, while on others I will be in the library on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

However, you can always contact me by email, which I check daily: helsleym@email.sc.edu

I look forward to meeting & working with all of you!
