Read Across America Celebrations
Bessemer City Primary Celebrations
On Wednesday, March 2, the students of Bessemer City Primary were treated to a visit from Cat in the Hat (aka Bessemer City Central Guidance Counselor, Jason Allen) as well as 25 guest readers from around the Gaston County community. Students celebrated Dr. Seuss' Birthday all week with Silly Sock Day, Silly Hat Day, Favorite Character Day, Favorite Color Day and ended with Pajama Day. Each day Principal Kristie Gornto read quotes and teachers shared a number of Dr. Seuss books with our students. SLMC Kim Beam, coordinated the event.
Belmont Middle School celebrated "Read Across America" day with activities and a visit from the Cat in the Hat (Lee Dedmon) and Thing 1 (Marilyn Dedmon).

March Madness Come to Chavis Middle
The Chavis version of a March Madness Tournament! We took the top sixteen most circulated book, made a tournament bracket with them, and encouraged students to fill out the brackets. I have been visiting classrooms and talking it up with my classes. Students vote through a google form. They earn points for choices that are picked through voting. Prizes are awarded throughout the the tournament and students with the highest correct choices will have a donut party to reveal the tournament winner.

East Gaston World Travelers
East Gaston High School's media specialist, Shay Whitlow, applied for her school to participate in the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program. Expeditions is a new product that allows teachers to take their classes on virtual field trips, immersing students in experiences that bring abstract concepts to life and giving students a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom. On Monday, February 29th Google worked with 20 different East Gaston classes in the media center to virtually visit places around the world and times in history. The trips are collections of virtual reality panoramas — 360° photo spheres and 3D images and video. Some of the tours included biology students visiting the Galapagos Islands, mythology students viewing ancient Rome, and ROTC students exploring the artifacts of the Tuskegee Airmen.
