STAFF SPOTLIGHT ๐ฆ
STAFF SPOTLIGHT- KRYSTEN HOFFMAN- 4TH GRADE TEACHER
Hello my name is Krysten Hoffman. I have been married 10 years this November. I have a 7 year old son and a infant daughter. This is my 4th school year at Desert Heights, but my first year in 4th grade. I started as a PTA parent (back when Desert Heights had a PTA), then a substitute teacher, did my student teaching, and then became a teacher all at Desert Heights. I have learned so much because of working along side staff and families. Just like all of you, I have invested so much time and love to our school. I am so grateful to have found a home at Desert Heights.
NEWS FROM PRINCIPAL FRYDMAN
Dear Parents and Families:
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. ANDโas alwaysโevery book they buy earns rewards for our school.
Hereโs what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from FEB. 13TH -FEB 17TH FROM 9AM-4PM in the Library.
This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWalletโyour childโs digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each childโs eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you canโt make it to the Fair, then shop at our schoolโs Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.
2- Hour Delays and School Cancellations
When the Washoe County School District decides on a 2-Hour Delay or a school cancellation, we will also post that information on the school website, the Coyote Pride Newsletter, Class Dojo, Facebook and Twitter. On 2-Hour Delays, the school gates open at 11:15 and school officially starts at 11:30.
It looks like this week will be sunny but cold. Most likely we will be letting students outside for recess if the temperature is about 35 degrees and its sunny. Please send them to school with warm clothing (hats, gloves, winter jackets).

School Attendance
I can't stress enough how important it is to have students coming to school. Students who are absent 10% (18 days) are deemed chronically absent. It is very difficult to catch students up or identify if they are in need of intervention or special education if they have not been coming to school. We will be setting up meetings with families who have children that have been chronically absent.
4 FACTS ABOUT SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
- Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back.
- By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
- Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a studentโs academic performance. Thatโs just two days a month and thatโs known as chronic absence
- When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.
dippin' dots
We will be selling dippin' dots (yogurt) for the next several weeks on only Wednesdays & Thursdays. Dippin' Dots sell for $3.00. Any proceeds or profit will go to Student Incentives and the PBIS Program. Flavors that students can pick are:
- Cotton Candy
- Cookies & Cream
- Cookie Dough
- Banana Split
Students with Special Needs
The Special Education program has acquired a new IEP reporting program to access studentsโ IEP documents. EdPlan is an online platform allowing families to access information on their student's educational plans. Parent University is hosting an information meeting on January 25 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Wooster High School. There will be free childcare and interpretation in Spanish.
WATCH DOGS ๐
We have posted to Watch DOG schedule below. We would love to have every dad or positive male role model in a student's life to volunteer 1 full day during the school year. If interested, please call our main office at 775-677-5444.
Donuts with Dads Event
Thank you to everyone who showed up for our Donuts with Dads Event. We got a lot of positive male role models who signed up to be a Watch DOG at our school. We appreciate the support and donation from DoughBoys Donuts and we couldn't do this event without them.
PARENT RESOURCES ๐
Helping Children Learn๐
Parents and family members often ask how they can support and encourage their student's creativity and love of learning. Whether you have a 7-year-old or a 17-year-old, research shows that students perform better academically and behaviorally if the student knows their parents are involved and have high expectations. To support this effort, each month we will feature a new "Helping Children Learn" newsletter that is full of ideas to support learning at home.
