What is The Great Depression?

The Great Depression was the hardest economic upset in history of the industrial economy. In the United States, the Great Depression began a little after the stock market crash in 1929, which wiped out millions of investors, and messed up the banks.

During this time many people were doing anything to make or get money, jobs were dropping, and the banks were closing. As seen in the picture below people were even selling their children to make money.

The American Dream

James Truslow Adam, stated that the American dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.... It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position." (Library of Congress)

After reading what he quoted, I interpreted the American Dream as the way people want to live and how much they want to fulfill their dreams and hopes. Also because the title "The American Dream" makes it seem like everyone in the world hopes to live up to this and get their own American dream.

John Steinbeck (biggest literary works and themes)

He is widely known as an American author of twenty-seven books, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books, and five collections of short stories. He is also known for the comic novels Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row , East of Eden , and the novellas Of Mice and Men and The Red Pony . His writings generally show the themes of fate and injustice. Many site describe his writings as straight-forward, natural, and talk about him using the "less is more" affect.
