Is It Really New Math?

The district put on a presentation last week to elementary parents that explained the big idea behind the new shift in teaching math. A highlight from the meeting simply was that a lot of things have not changed, however, students are taught a deeper understanding of number sense and problem solving. This allows students multiple ways to solve complex problems. Students are still taught the tradition algorithms, however, memorizing them is not good enough anymore. Modernization of technology can help solve those simple types of problems, but many times they are not the most efficient way to solve a problem.

Check out the 8 minute video clip below. It will be well worth the small amount of time it takes to watch it.

We have started a new after school club this year for grades 3-5. Our "mathletes" will be engaged in math games and activities that are all math related. A big thank you to Mr. Hecht, our instructional aide and Mrs. Barbeau, our math specialist for organizing and running this new club!
