KING'S KORNER
Dr. Joana King, Assistant Superintendent
“Another professional development day! What an inconvenience!” It's a comment that often rings out across kitchen tables, through grocery store aisles, on the sidelines at soccer games, and in the break rooms of local businesses. Families, and even employers, are inconvenienced on inservice days, or when the school day starts late or ends early, to provide time for teacher professional development. We don’t take this lightly in the Clinton School District. We know families expect their children to be in school and are often inconvenienced with finding daycare for their children on professional development release days. So, what is professional development and what actually goes on at the schools when students are not present?
Professional development is the strategy schools and school districts use to ensure that educators continue to strengthen their practice throughout their career. The most effective professional development engages teams of teachers to focus on the needs of their students. Teachers learn and problem solve together in order to ensure all students achieve success. Clinton School District uses a variety of schedules to provide this collaborative learning and work time for teachers. When time set aside for professional development is used effectively and parents receive reports about student results, they realize the benefits to teachers and their students far outweigh the scheduling inconvenience. When communities see their schools making steady upward progress, they applaud the role of professional development. We hope the community of Clinton sees the benefits of these release days for students in the renewed energy our teachers and administrators have for student success!
If you have any questions about what goes on during professional development days, I invite you to call or come by Central Office. I would be thrilled to visit with you about all of the great things going on in Clinton Schools!

"IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL" ARTICLES
Welding at Clinton Technical School
Submitted by: Jake Fowler, CTS Director
The staff at Clinton Technical School work very hard to ensure that we educate students in such a way to provide them with the knowledge and skills necessary for post secondary education or to earn a comfortable living out of high school. When discussing high demand careers with a high earning potential, a career in welding has become a popular choice for students from our nine sending schools. With the support of the Clinton School District Board of Education, we have invested in making sure that we are providing opportunities to learn on up-to-date equipment, allowing students to reach their full potential out of high school.
Within the last two years, the welding shop at Clinton Technical School has undergone a significant amount of improvements. Two years ago, KCPL donated a new track torch. Last year, through the funding of a state grant, the welding program purchased a computer-automated plasma torch, and this year, 20 new Lincoln all-in-one welding machines and two plasma torches. As far as the facility goes, 20 new welding booths were built allowing each student an individual work space to practice their trade.
Each year, our programs invite industry partners to our facility to review our Career and Technical Education programs. Curriculum and equipment are always the two largest topics of conversation and are most influential in ensuring that we are providing an education that allows our students to take the next step. More important than any equipment is having an effective teacher who can deliver the curriculum and coach students as they attempt to improve their abilities. In his three years at Clinton Technical School, Mr. Marty Mitchell has proven to be an effective educator who is preparing students for success.
Marty Mitchell, Welding Instructor
I was born and raised in Clinton, Missouri on a cattle farm east of Clinton. I grew up around welding as my dad was a welder by trade for Peabody Coal Company and also had his own welding fabrication and repair business. I was always in the shop growing up and had an interest in it.
I graduated from Clinton High School in 2010 and was also a completer of the welding program in 2010. I was very involved in the welding and agriculture programs in high school. The following July after high school graduation, I started classes at Tulsa Welding School. I graduated from Tulsa the following February.
I had a job lined up after graduation working as a Class 2 welder for Helmrich and Payne IDC where I built, manufactured and repaired oil and natural gas drilling rigs. Through the time that I was there, I climbed the ranks pretty quickly to become a Fitter Welder. I worked there for four years and decided to come back home and start up my dad’s old business doing custom fabrication and farm repair work and help out on the family farm again. After a year of doing that and getting everything up and running, it was brought to my attention that the Tech School was looking for an instructor for the welding program. I was interested, so I applied and was fortunate to be hired at Clinton Technical School. At first I wasn’t 100% on whether or not teaching was my calling, but I'm into my 4th year here and gaining more momentum each year. I am confident that I made a great decision becoming a teacher.
Tait Kimbrough - Sherwood High School
Mr. Mitchell is awesome. He is really good with students and takes time to work individually with everyone regardless of their learning level. He models what is expected. He is very straight forward. I appreaciate how friendly the entire staff is at CTS. It is a welcoming school. I participated in an Agriculture Welding program at Sherwood, but we didn’t have enough welders for each student. I get more time to get better at CTS and the equipment is new and current to what is used in industry.
I plan to go to college and become an English teacher at UCM. I chose to become an educator because I grew up in a family of educators and think I am a good fit for that type of work. If education does not work out, I believe I will be eligible for a career in welding. It is always nice to have a backup plan.
Noah Duncan - Clinton High School
CTS provides a fun learning environment. I look forward to coming here everyday, all the teachers are really nice. The hands-on approach keeps me interested. Classroom work is important, especially blueprint reading, but the shop work can’t be replicated from a desk. I have learned about programming an automated plasma cutter using specialized software similar to drafting software. There is a lot of math involved in the program so it has been nice to apply some of my prior academics to something I actually enjoy doing. Mr. Mitchell is the best teacher I have had.
Next year I plan to attend Midwest Welding Institute. I currently have received around $3000 in scholarships and plan to apply for more throughout the year to help pay for MWI. After I graduate from MWI, I plan to work on the pipeline and get my own rig truck for side work.
INTERNSHIP
The 2017-2018 school year is the first time we have offered internship opportunities to students in all CTE programs. We currently have 12 students placed in a healthcare internship and are actively pursuing internship opportunities in the following career areas; Agriculture, Automotive, Building Trades, Business (including Accounting, Multimedia, Graphic Design), Computer Repair/Networking, Machining, Marketing, and Welding. If you feel like your place of employment would be interested in participating in the Clinton Technical School internship program, contact Paula Jones or Lisa Kaiser at (660) 885-6101.
Encouraging and Supporting at Clinton Middle School
Submitted by: Jennifer Paschall, CMS Principal
Clinton Middle School students had the pleasure of attending an assembly on Thursday, October 26th to hear an inspirational message from Dr. Laymon Hicks. The message focused on kindness; you don’t know everyone’s story-be kind to everyone, and most importantly-YOU MATTER. CMS would like to convey our thanks to the Skidmore Foundation and the Sisney family for providing the funding to bring Dr. Hicks to Clinton High School and Clinton Middle School. Our students were deeply moved by his message.
Students are being exposed to Dr. Hicks' message of kindness each day through the morning announcements. And with a huge thank you to Bright Futures, they are also being encouraged through the school's newly painted restrooms which display words of encouragement and positivity.
The counseling department, in conjunction with the administrative team, will be providing lessons throughout the month of November. Our counselor, Mrs. Vaughn, has begun presenting bullying prevention lessons in the 6th grade classrooms this week. We encourage students to stand up to bullying: report to an adult at school, or at home, when someone has been bullied, or if they have been bullied. A commonly used definition of bullying developed by Dr. Olweus is: A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself. The bullying prevention program implementation will continue throughout the school year during Cardinal Time. Character lessons will begin this month in Cardinal Time with students. November's character word of the month is RESPECT. We encourage students to use respectful words to one another, about their peers, and about themselves.
I am looking forward to seeing the impact these programs will have on our students. Having a safe and caring environment for our students is a top priority. The administrative team thanks parents for their continued support. Without support, we would not be able to implement or sustain these programs.
Shine Bright,
Ms. Jennifer Paschall
