Overview of Teaching & Learning
English
Year 3 will be undertaking a unit of work 'Fairy Tales'. Students will begin with an in-depth study of traditional fairy tales. The unit allows students to explore traditional and fractured fairy tales in order to see stories from a different point of view. Students will participate in explicit reading, grammar and writing lessons linked to this unit of work.
· Students will continue to focus on developing their decoding skills in reading during reading groups with a specific focus on building fluency and using expression, They will also build on their comprehension skills of finding the main idea, retelling and sequencing.
· Imaginative texts will be the primary focus for writing as the students prepare for NAPLAN. Students will build their understanding of sequencing their writing, creating exciting characters as well as creating and solving problems. They will plan, create and edit Imaginative texts.
· In Speaking and Listening students will be supported to express their opinion through impromptu speeches. They will gain skills in developing their ideas to create engaging content, using eye contact and speaking with a suitable volume.
Mathematics
This term Year 3 will focus on whole number, addition and subtraction, fractions and decimals, multiplication and division, patterns and algebra, position, area and volume.
· Students are required to count, order, read and record numbers of up to five digits. They will use informal and formal mental and written strategies to solve word problems. Students will count by twos, threes, fives or tens using skip counting and demonstrate multiplication through forming groups and arrays. They will record, describe and complete number patterns and determine missing numbers in number sentences. Students will estimate, measure, compare, convert and record area, and volume using formal units. They will create and interpret simple grid maps to show position.
Science & Technology
This term, Year 3 students will investigate how materials change state by adding or removing heat. They will conduct experiments and learn to complete a Science Report to document their conducting of experiments and the results.
HSIE (History & Geography)
·During Term 2, Year 3 students will understand the importance of Country and Place to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples who belong to our local area. Students will investigate an example of change and continuity over time in the local community. They will also learn about the contribution by different groups and individuals in the community.
Creative Arts
In Visual Arts, students will make artworks linked to the topics of Community and Remembrance. Students will focusing on the styles of artwork used in Aboriginal society. They will discuss and write about the purpose and meaning of artworks through studying Aboriginal artists.
In music lessons with Mrs French, students are learning to repeat short rhythmic patterns and use formal methods to notate sounds.
Personal Development, Health, Physical Education
In Term Two PDH, students will participate in a unit providing teaching and learning activities around Child Protection. Students will investigate the essential question: How can I support my right to be safe?
· Through this unit, students will identify and support the rights and responsibilities of themselves and others. Students will build their understanding of warning signs associated with unsafe situations. They will apply interpersonal and self-management skills to practise responses and strategies that promote personal health, safety and wellbeing. Students will recognise the importance of trust in relationships and identify sources of support to seek help and advice.
· Students are expected to participate in 150 minutes of physical activity each week. In Term 2, the focus will be to adapt known skills in a variety of physical activity contexts. This includes the weekly BSBF lessons for one hour, PSSA or House Sport as well as time with the classroom teacher.
· BSBF is held every Monday and House Sport or PSSA is every Friday. Students should wear their sport uniform on these days. Please remember to bring a hat and a drink bottle on these days.
