5th Grade News
Mrs. Stinson's WES 5th Grade 2022-2023
Update from Mrs. Spears on 11/27/2022
Thank you all for a great few months of school. We appreciate the work done by Mrs. Jennifer Cardwell and Miss Janet Lyon over the past few months, and we are grateful for their support. Mrs. Stinson is in the final month of her leave, and she will begin teaching the class full time in January 2023. Thank you in advance for your patience this year.
We would like to thank you for your support at our recent PTO Family Night. We were so proud of these students and their performance for our Veteran's Day program and for our PTO Family Night. We are grateful to Mrs. Ezzelle for her music leadership to make this performance happen and to Miss Lyon for her leadership and encouragement to help the kids perform so well. This class did an excellent job singing and listening respectfully to our Veteran speakers and guests. We are proud of them all.
We were proud of our students who worked hard on their soil and water posters. This week in science, we continue learning about forces and motion in science. We also will continue to review our recent check ins as a way to practice and review key science concepts that will be on the end of grade test in May.
In math, we are studying multiplication and division of whole numbers. Our fifth grade problems get pretty complicated, but these are very important math skills for students. We are learning how to read and understand written word problems and then use computational strategies to solve them. Most fifth grade word problems incorporate multiple skills, so we also continue to practice addition and subtraction. In fifth grade, we will expand our multiplication and division of whole numbers to fractions and decimals in the future. We are also reviewing the recent math check ins to review important content and re-teach key skills.
In reading, we are building vocabulary skills and summarizing and using details from the text to support our answers in reading. We are reading multiple fiction and non-fiction texts each week, and we also are working on inferences. Students spend lots of time reading and working on reading and writing in science. We will review the reading check ins from previous weeks in hopes of learning from that assessment.

Update from Mrs. Spears on 10/2/2022
Thank you for your patience as we've gotten back into the swing of school. Your fifth graders have done a great job adapting to a new school year under the supervision of a substitute teacher. Mrs. Taylor Stinson continues to be home on maternity leave, and she looks forward to being back in January to work with your child. We are keeping in close contact with Mrs. Stinson each week.
We would like to thank Mrs. Jennifer Cardwell for substituting through the end of September. Mrs. Cardwell is a beloved retired teacher here, and we appreciate her getting this school year and class off to a great start. She is already missing retired life, but she promises to return later in the school year to visit and check in on your fifth graders.
We would like to welcome Ms. Janet Lyon who will begin serving this fifth grade class on Monday, October 3. Mrs. Lyon is a retired WES teacher, and she has a long history of accomplished teaching. She taught for 30+ years in many grades (including several in 5th grade at WES), has a Master's Degree in Education, and is National Board Certified. She will work with this class until Mrs. Stinson returns in January, and we are incredibly grateful to her for coming back to work with our students.
We have a full team supporting your child and Ms. Lyon while we await Mrs. Stinson's return. Ms. Lyon plans daily with our fifth grade team Ms. Bentley and Mrs. Sloop, and you can be assured that your child is learning fifth grade standards and using the same resources as all classes in the school. Mrs. Byers and I visit the classroom frequently to help with all sorts of issues, and our instructional coach Mrs. Hincher is also in the class frequently to support instruction.
Ms. Lyon is set up on ClassDojo, so you should be able to message her directly. If not, please feel free to reach out to me (Beckie Spears) or Andrea Byers with any questions. We are all here to help! Thanks for your patience!
