5th Grade ASPIRE Math
October 5, 2017
End of the First Nine-Weeks
The end of the grading period is upon us! All missing assignments are due by October 21. Please continue to encourage your child to complete their math work on time.
Multiplication Facts
It is imperative that our math scholars know their multiplication facts with quick recall. It is a foundational skill that is necessary for operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and geometry. Please work with your child at home with memorization of these facts up to 12 x 12 if they have not learned them yet. We will give the students timed multiplication fact quizzes later this month.
This Week
This week, the ASPIRE Math 5 scholars started their division journey. We began by creating models using base ten blocks. Students had to form perfect rectangles with the blocks, and take into consideration the length and width. They were fun puzzles to solve, and helped create a conceptual understanding of the division process. Next, we learned the partial quotients method, which allowed them to find multiple paths to find the same answer. We also took time to administer the district assessment for our first two units to ensure that the students retained what we have previously covered this year.
Next Week
Next week, the scholars will continue to explore division with two-digit divisors. We will start by using estimation to calculate quotients, which will lead us to the traditional algorithm. We will end the short week by solving multi-step problems that include all operations. We are very pleased with the positive attitudes and the eagerness to learn shown by the ASPIRE math students. We have already made significant progress in only seven weeks, and we love starting the day with this talented group each and every morning. We truly appreciate all of your support at home!
