Note from the nurse
Spring is finally here! As we’re seeing more days with warmer weather, it is important to review safety precautions and boundaries when playing outside. Along with the potential risks of injury while playing outside, there are many benefits to kids getting outside, including improvements in physical health. Research has shown that safely getting out in the sun helps our bodies make vitamin D, which will help our kids grow strong bones. Additionally, getting outside helps children improve fine and gross motor development. Did you also know that kids who spend more time outside tend to have lower rates of myopia (nearsightedness)? Studies have shown that when sunlight comes in contact with the retina, it causes the release of dopamine into the eye. This may prevent the eye from elongating. Preventing the eye from growing too long is the main goal of myopia prevention or management.
With the many benefits of playing outside, there are also come risks. It’s important to reinforce safety when getting outdoors. Here are some ways to do so:
- Always wear a helmet when on a bike or scooter.
- Be aware of your surroundings: talk about how far children are allowed to be away from adults when in a new place.
- Carry a well-stocked first aid kit.
- Seek shade when outdoors for longer periods of time.
- Remind kids to always alert an adult when they hit their head or get injured.
An example of a minor injury that can occur while in the great outdoors are splinters. Here is an educational video about splinters to share with your kids. It talks about what to do in the case of getting a splinter and what cool stuff our bodies do to help with splinters!

COVID update
The Department of Health (DOH) requires schools to inform families and students about COVID-19 case numbers and potential outbreaks. Over the past two weeks, there has been a total of 3 confirmed cases at our school. The accuracy of our data depends on self-reporting. Thank you for continuing to let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19. To view additional information, including school and district trends visit the District’s COVID-19 data dashboard. The dashboard is updated weekly on Monday evenings.
If your child is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 keep them home and test for COVID-19. Families can order free COVID-19 tests from the state. Together, we can keep our schools healthy and safe.

Enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year is now open!
Dear Northshore Families and Prospective Families:
Northshore School District’s enrollment process for 2023-24 is open! Enroll early to receive important information and prepare for next fall.
PRESCHOOL
Northshore preschool programs are now enrolling children, ages 3-5. The preschool years are among the most critical in a child's life that influence learning. The Northshore School District is committed to providing the support that our youngest learners need to prepare them to succeed in school, cultivate friendships, and create a sense of community and belonging. The district proudly offers a variety of inclusive general education learning environments. Classes implement the Creative Curriculum, a developmental whole child framework approach, and utilize the GOLD assessment tool to monitor student learning.
Available preschool programs include both FREE and tuition-based options.
FREE Programs: Head Start, ECEAP and Ready Start
Eligibility is determined by the child’s age, family income, and opportunity gaps. These programs are located at Sorenson Early Childhood Center, Woodmoor Elementary, and Kenmore Elementary. Spaces will be filled on a first come first serve basis for eligible families. Families are encouraged to complete an application as soon as possible. The information on the application is confidential and used only to determine a child’s eligibility for the programs. The District does not require, check, or report on immigration or DSHS status. View the applications for income-eligible free preschool.
Tuition Programming
The Ready Start programs are located at Sorenson Early Childhood Center and Woodmoor Elementary. Spaces will be filled on a first come first serve basis. Families are encouraged to complete an application as soon as possible. View the application for tuition-based programs.
To learn more about any of our district preschool programs, visit the Northshore Early Childhood District website. Families who have questions can email Sorenson Early Childhood Center at sorensonecc@nsd.org or call (425) 408-5570.
KINDERGARTEN
