Second Grade

Welcome Back!!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! The Surretts had a fantastic and restful break.

Second semester is off to a great start. We are now rising third graders!! Expectations will be rising as well. I will be looking closer at student writing by looking for correct spelling of word wall and past spelling words, punctuation, and using parts of speech that we have learned correctly. We will be using more technology in the classroom by taking more tests online and through the Smart Response system. I am also excited to start teaching the students how to do research on the internet when our new computers arrive!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, I am always available.

Mrs. Surrett

What's happening this week...

Reading- This week's story is A Quilt Story. We are working on Comparing and Contrasting over the next few weeks. You may hear student refer to making double bubble maps. These are what we use to show how we can compare two items or people. We will be comparing quite a few stories from around the world in our upcoming Fairy Tale/Folktale/Fable Unit

Language Arts- Our spelling pattern this week will focus on words that end in consonant -le. -cle, ble, dle, tle, gle.

Math-- We are continuing to work on multi-digit addition by moving into the hundreds. The students moved very easily into today's lesson adding hundreds together. We will be regrouping ones and tens by the end of the unit.

Beginning in January we will continue to focus on subtraction weekly timed tests. They will begin with the -2 and with the 100 addition problems on the reversed side. I will not give both timed tests on the same day. I cannot stress enough how important it is to be fluent in their math facts. Next year they will be expected to become fluent in multiplication facts.

Social Studies/Science-- We will begin our unit on The Georgia Colonists and the settling of Savannah. This is one of my favorite units. I have lots of pictures and a virtual field trip the students will take through Savannah.

The flu is still going strong everywhere. Thank goodness 2nd grade is at %100 right now. Please be sure to keep your child home if they are not feeling well.

I've been using a completely hassle-free fundraiser called Shoparoo to earn money for Peachtree Academy Primary School and would love for you to join me. Shoparoo is a free mobile app that lets you earn cash donations for any school you choose, just by taking pictures of your shopping receipts. It's that easy and just takes a few seconds. The best part is that it doesn't matter where you shop or what you buy - every receipt counts!

There are schools earning hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of dollars a year through Shoparoo, and I want ours to be one of them.

Plus, if you use this referral code, we'll both earn extra donations for your first qualifying receipt: zab61396
