Bonneville Elementary School
December 2020
A Letter from the Principal
After this crazy year, It is hard to believe that we are getting ready for the holiday season and a great 2021. I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Bonneville Community. I am very humbled and grateful to be able to work with such wonderful people. I appreciate the dedication of our teachers, the staff, our PTA, SCC, and the entire Bonneville Community. This year I have had the opportunity to see the great teaching that is being done by all our teachers, witnessing the countless hours of dedication and hard work they put in for Bonneville students. It is impressive, to say the least, the amount of concern our staff has for each child.
I would also like to thank the Bonneville parents for supporting and trusting us with your children. Your patience and dedication to your children, as well as the support you lend to the school make Bonneville an unbelievable place to be. It has been inspiring to be part of a community that supports one another in our endeavors so that our goals are more easily achieved.
Finally, I want to wish all of you a Very Happy Winter Break! I know that this year our celebrations are going to look very different, but I also know that our students are special and that we have a bright future. Please stay well, stay safe, and show kindness to those you love. I am very thankful to be part of this wonderful Bonneville community, and I want to make sure that once it’s safe to be together again, I will have the chance to get to know each one of you!
From the Culley family to yours, we wish you a very happy holiday season. Enjoy the holiday break, and we will see you in 2021.
Sincerely,
Principal Culley

Mrs. Leys' Class Invites Mystery Reader
Our class has started inviting parents and other grownups to be our class Mystery Reader on Fridays. The Mystery Reader logs on before the students return from Library, and when the 3rd graders come back to class, there's a big reveal! Mystery Readers are asked to select a book they know their 3rd grader loves and they're encouraged dress up and come in disguise to add to the fun.

Solar System Fun in 4th Grade!
The fourth grade has been busy learning all about the Solar System. Rotation versus revolution, the scale of the heavenly bodies, the Milky Way Galaxy, light years, and how and why shadows are created have all been explored. It has been so exciting to learn that our fragile little blue planet is such a small, but vital part of our universe!
5th Graders Reading Blood on the River
5th grade has been enjoying our new novel Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone. We have been studying vocabulary, text structures, and the history behind this historical fiction novel. It's been fascinating to make connections between the characters and the information we read about in our Studies Weekly newspapers. We are immersed in the world of developing colonies.
6th Grade is Reading The Giver
Sixth graders have been reading the Newberry winning novel by Lois Lowery known as The Giver. They have been studying what it means to live in a perfect world (utopia) vs. an imperfect world (dystopia) and how choices and memories play an important part in the lives of human beings. In the coming weeks, we will be learning the fate of Jonas and Gabriel as they travel to "Elsewhere."
Counselor Corner
SEL: Social Emotional Learning
Kindergarten and first grade continue to work on identifying feelings. Skills for learning are reinforced in each lesson so students can practice skills in SEL lessons and core subjects.
Second, third, and fourth grades are learning about how people can have different preferences and all about the meaning of compassion. We have defined compassion as the action part of empathy. We must first use empathy to understand and feel how someone feels before we can give compassion. Students understand that compassion can include doing something or saying something to help another person.
Fifth graders have also learned about compassion and are shifting into their second unit on emotion management. These lessons will introduce tools for managing frustration, anxiety, and calming down.
Students will continue to receive bi-monthly Second Step lessons in their Zoom classrooms from the School Counselor.
Families are encouraged to follow along with the weekly scope and sequence of lessons by logging on to Second Step and visiting some of the at-home resources.
