Newsletter Week 10 Term 2

Turua School 7th July 2022

Tomorrow is the final day of term 2 and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 25th July. Hopefully we enjoy some fine weather! Today we said goodbye to Karyn Benny and wished her all the best for her future travels. It was a great opportunity to thank Karyn for her many years of teaching at Turua and all the wonderful opportunities she has provided for her students. She will certainly be missed by us all!

We would like to confirm that Heidi Darrah has been appointed to our teacher vacancy and will start teaching in Patiki at the start of next term. Heidi has been relieving at Turua School this year and is very excited to have won a full time position.

Elections are coming up. Nominations open on the 15th July.

Forms will be emailed so keep an eye out for the email. Please make sure your contact details are up to date.

Becoming a board member

Why join a school board?

School board members are active leaders in our schools. They have an important role of supporting strong professional leadership and ensuring effective teaching for all students through informed governance.

Parents/caregivers and people in the wider community can be parent representatives. School boards need to represent the diversity of their school communities to ensure a bright future for all our children.

The school board elections are the opportunity to vote for candidates who will make a positive difference for children’s education. We need more people willing to use their skills and experiences for the benefit of students!

"Board members are entrusted by the community to ensure the success of our schools and a bright future for our children. We need an education system where all children are expected to succeed and one where we all take shared responsibility in ensuring this happens. As a member of a school board you can make things happen - you can make a difference."

- Lorraine Kerr, NZSTA President

What does it mean to be on a school board?

Our Community member guide to the role of school boards provides information on what school boards are, the role of members, and how to become a board member. You can also check out our information for parents on the NZSTA website.

Our communities need great boards to help build great schools

School trustees (now known as school board members) share their experience on what it's like to be on the board.

We had an assembly this morning and several awards were given out. Amazing work everyone!

Next term we have managed to negotiate an additional hot meal day and our students will now receive hot lunches on Monday and Thursday from Kerr and Ladbrook. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday lunches will be provided by Subway.

We ended the term on a high with Te Wheke. We raided the rhubarb patch and made a delicious shortcake. Out in the garden we were lucky enough to have two dads on the job. This enabled a couple of our big jobs to get finished off - the compost bin and the mulching. Next term we look forward to using the brassicas coming on and of course preparing for spring planting. Most excitingly the garden to table bake sale will be taking place on September 1, so get ready to stick the tins. We are always looking for more volunteers so please just let us know if you want to know more. Enjoy the break :)

Well done to our very creative colouring competition winners. Good work everyone!

There are nits going around so please check your childrens hair. And treat if necessary. Thanks

Some lovely locals have planted some new trees in the ngahere, there are blue pegs marking where they are. If you are visiting the ngahere in the holidays please be kind and treat it with respect.

Can you please update the office with any new contact details. Email addresses included.

Goldfields Got Talent

During the school holidays Goldfields Shopping Centre is hosting a good old talent quest. We have a couple of entry forms in the school office.
