Second Graders Shine Bright
Sharing is Caring!
The sharing component of the Responsive Classroom approach provides ongoing practice in respectful interaction. It enables students to explore ideas and feelings with each other in a safe way. Sharing allows students to discover the ways in which they’re alike, as well as the ways in which they are diverse! It also allows students to pay attention, empathize, listen, and reflect on/to each other’s experiences.
I've included our sharing schedule again for the year. On your child’s scheduled day please encourage them to share meaningful experiences. Your child may accompany his/her share with an item that may go along with the experience. However, not every share must include an item to show. Please use the following topics to help:
- How do you feel about_______________________________? (school town, or national event)
- What’s one accomplishment you feel proud of?
- What’s one thing you like to do when you’re not in school?
- If you could change one thing in the school what would it be?
- What person do you most admire?
- Share about a time when you showed courage.
- Share about a time when you made a mistake.
- What’s something you are looking forward to?
- If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go?

Journey's Jargon-Lesson 2
ComprehensionThis cycle the theme is Families. We are looking at many different kinds of families to understand the Target Skill-Compare/Contrast. We will push one step further in asking ourselves Questions-Target Strategy as well.
We are using what we learned last cycle-subjects & predicates to help us recognize what a sentence is. We will be looking for run-on sentences as well as complete sentences.
You can find Lesson 2 Home Letter HERE.
The Parent Pipelines can be found HERE.
The Units run about 10 school days in length. The children will have their first assessment on Monday. There is nothing you have to do at home for this assessment. We've been doing plenty of practice during our 30 minute Fundations block.
Unit 2 will begin on Tuesday, October 6. I will sending home the first set of Fundations homework on Tuesday. There will be an introduction letter, the homework (with directions & DUE DATE), and a handwriting cheat sheet. We are really working on transitioning to these new handwriting lines. They are all doing a wonderful job at school and I'm expecting them to show the same neat handwriting on their homework.
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this new program or the homework.
Writer's at Work
Unit 2 will begin with simple addition number stories. We will spend a great deal of time finding the pertinent information, creating a number model, solving, and writing the sum using units. We will be using a few different websites and iPad apps that target addition number stories. The WEBSITES and iPAD APPS can be found HERE.
Just a reminder-math homework will be Monday-Thursday and DUE the next school day. The homelinks workbook that was sent home in the early part of September is the math homework 95% of the time. It is noted as "HL 2.1", for example, in their agenda. If you have any questions please let me know.
