Principal's Message
The start of a new school year always brings a mix of emotions for me. I always get a little bit nervous at the anticipation of not knowing what the school year will bring. I always get a little bit sad that the warm weather will be turning cooler and the days will be getting shorter. The strongest emotion that I feel every year, however, is EXCITEMENT. I am so excited to begin the 2019-2020 school year with our Thalberg community. The best part of my job is sharing every day with the children. Their smiling faces and their contagious energy is what I look forward to the most.
There are several changes at Thalberg this year. Mrs. Melissa Kennedy is now our Main Office Secretary. Our school nurse is Mrs. Casie Messina. We have three new classroom teachers. Miss Gabbie Chabot and Mrs. Kim Kelly are teaching Grade 3 and Ms. Emily Salerno will be teaching Kindergarten.
Our Open House is scheduled for Thursday, September 12 from 6:30-8:00pm. I hope that you can join us to learn about your child’s day and what he/she will be learning about this year. This is an important night to hear about curriculum and start the line of communication with your child’s teacher. This evening is designed for adults only and can be a bit boring for our students.
I hope you all enjoyed your summer and were able to make memories with family and friends. I’m looking forward to a successful school year and as always, do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns that you might have.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Reeves

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Game Pit
Zachary Krar, a former student at Thalberg, began the research process for his Eagle Scout Badge a year ago. After having experienced a "GaGa Pit" at Camp Sloper he decided this would be his project for Thalberg. For those not familiar with a GaGa Pit it is a contained area where dodge ball is played. Many schools have this and is quite popular with the students.
Zach began building the "pit" in August of this year and on Friday, August 23 a ribbon cutting ceremony was held. He will be attending the Academy of Aerospace and Engineering as a freshman. We thank him and wish him the best in his studies.

Planning Celebrations and Activities in Elementary School
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: Our elementary schools celebrate food free birthdays by enjoying fun activities or projects. Examples of celebration ideas that parents and guardians may want to provide for their child include:
Ø Bringing in non-food items (age appropriate) for celebrating such as: pencils, erasers, crayons, plant seeds, bookmarks, stickers, etc.
Ø Arranging with your child’s teacher a time to come to school as a “Guest Reader” to celebrate the special day or donating a book in your child’s name.
Ø Donating games for indoor recess or supplies for outdoor recess - jump ropes, balls, etc.
Ø Engaging students in a special art project (teachers may provide suggestions).
Please consult with your child’s teacher to ensure that any items you wish to provide are safe for that classroom. All parents/guardians must advise their child’s teacher of a celebration request at least one week in advance.
OTHER CELEBRATIONS and ACTIVITIES: May involve food with careful planning. To maintain the safety of all of our students, we must adhere to the following:
No unplanned or homemade foods will be allowed into a classroom or be given to students at any time. No food items will be sent home with students including candy attached to Valentine’s cards or in goodie bags.
The teacher will base food item choices by reviewing the classroom confidential list of food allergies and dietary restrictions and consulting with those student’s parents/guardians. Only planned, store-labeled food items will be allowed (in order to have availability to ingredient lists, if necessary). Fruits, vegetables and other healthy choices are preferred.
Written notice of the food items (with brand names, if necessary) will be sent to all parents before a planned celebration/activity. Written permission for the food items will be obtained by teacher from parents/guardians of students with food allergies/dietary restrictions.
We encourage you to be creative with “alternative to food” ideas for ALL!
WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!
As children return, so do head lice. They are common, can be treated, and can happen to anyone.
DO: DON’T:
Instruct children to keep personal items to self - (combs, brushes, ribbons, hats, etc.) Panic.
Observe for itching, scratch marks on scalp, live lice and nits strongly attached to hair. Allow sharing of personal items.
Contact your school nurse and family health care provider if you suspect head lice. Use any products on your child without checking with his/her doctor.
Follow treatment recommendations. Send you child to school with live lice or new nits in their hair.
Remove nits. This is an important lice control measure.
Call your school nurse and health care provider.
Have your school nurse check your child’s hair after treatment and before returning to the classroom.
Incorporate a head check as part of a normal grooming activity with your child, but inspect hair every other day during lice alerts.
