Safety & Security Update
Dear WMS Families,
Our first priority is to keep students and staff safe at school. We have tightened up our restroom use procedures here at WMS, particularly in the 8th grade, due to the pattern of students’ poor behavior choices. Unfortunately, there have been numerous reports of students vaping and going into the restroom to engage in things other than what the restroom is intended for (ex: bullying, harassment, fighting, ditching, etc.). As a result, we are strongly encouraging students to use the restroom during passing periods or at lunch. Students are allowed to use the restroom during class time in the event of an emergency.
Drugs and Nicotine Use
Our campus is drug and alcohol free, including tobacco / nicotine and vape products. In an attempt to prevent some of these behaviors from occurring, we have taken an educational approach. All students in 6th and 8th grades are required to take our health class. In that class, there is a unit focused solely on drugs and nicotine use and their dangers to adolescents. If a student is caught vaping or with a vape device on campus, on the first offense we engage them in a program called "Second Chance." This is an online program that educates students on the dangers of vaping. We also work very closely with our counselors, families, and students involved in detrimental behaviors to discipline, educate, and offer substance abuse support. Our Board of Education Policy does state that a recommendation for expulsion will be made as a consequence for a second drug violation or for distribution.
Bullying
We look to create a secure school climate that is free from threat, harassment and any type of bullying behavior. Any type of bullying in our schools is unacceptable. We take any reports of bullying seriously, and would encourage you and your students to dialogue with us, school administration, about any bullying behavior you may have witnessed or been a victim of.
Your Partnership
Ultimately, we believe that school safety is a partnership between the school and our families. I would respectfully ask for your help — please engage your student in reinforcing conversations at home about appropriate and safe behavior. For support in starting these discussions with your children, view this tip sheet from Advanced Recovery Systems regarding drugs or this page on bullying. If you suspect your child may be engaging in tobacco, alcohol, or drug use, review the warning signs. Please reach out to our counseling staff if you need any additional support.
I hope this helps to clarify things for you a bit further. If you do, however, have more questions, please feel free to contact me directly at 970-686-8214. Thank you for your continued involvement and support!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Urich

CMAS Testing Dates
The Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessment is coming up! This assessment is given to all 3rd through 11th graders in the state of Colorado. CMAS measures the achievement and growth surrounding the Colorado Academic Standards. We utilize the results to identify trends in student learning in order to inform our professional practices. This year, our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be taking the Mathematics and English Language Arts assessments on April 11th, 12th, and 13th. Our 8th graders will be taking the Science Assessment during the same time.

Volunteer Coaching Information
There are a few steps to volunteering as a Coach at WMS. The first step is to speak with the Head Coach of the sport you want to participate in. When that coach approves you, he or she will send a note to Mr. Cox, our Athletic Director, informing him of the potential volunteer, and that the coach has met the potential volunteer and has a plan for that volunteer to help our program. The potential volunteer will then need to come see Mr. Cox to get a Volunteer Coaching form. You will need that form in order to complete an application to volunteer on our RAPTOR system. Once you have the form, go to RAPTOR and fill out the volunteer application. When you are approved, you will be in the system and are then able to work with our athletes.
Please call Mr. Cox if you have any questions, or need help working through the process, at (970) 686-8219
