¡Puerto Rico Se Levanta!
The Spanish classes raised $500 through the sale of our "Tú puedes contar comingo/You can count on me" t-shirts. The money is being donated to The Hispanic Foundation. This year we will continue to find ways to support the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Thanks for all who purchased shirts and supported our fundraiser!

November 13-17: “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.” – B.B. King
November 20-24: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” – Chinese Proverb
November 27-December 1: "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is to not stop questioning." - Albert Einstein
Monthly SEL Theme for the Month of November: HIGH EXPECTATIONS (GOAL SETTING)
High expectations involve believing that others can be successful, telling them so, and praising their accomplishments. Letting others know that you expect them to do well and congratulation them on a job well done.
This powerful skill is the ability to affirm others by looking for and finding food in people. It means building others up and encouraging them. It means finding reasons for praise and applause. It means nurturing and being supportive, and reinforcing what others do well. Most of all, it means giving people reasons to celebrate.
(Hal Urban, pg. 87) - In order to create these expectations, you need to create a sense of cooperation in all your undertakings. Before criticizing a teammate, walk a mile in his or her shoes.
Be BRAVE enough to be KIND and Have the Courage to Care!
Classroom News!
TEAM 6A:
Team 6A welcomed parents for the Growth Mindset Open House and it was a smash success. Parents worked with their students to identify what the growth mindset means, they were even given an Exit ticket! Everybody passedJ In math students are learning about math in the real world by multiplying and dividing both fractions and decimals. In Science we have just completed our unit on the Science process skills. In ELA students were completing their dive into the world of Percy Jackson and expanding their knowledge of the Greek Gods. In Social Studies we learned about other cultures and focused this month on Diwali, concluding in a full team Diwali celebration in the library.
Team 6B:
It’s been an exciting month here for Team 6B! Students have been investigating as social scientists to learn about ancient history and how we can learn from it. We traveled back in time to discover and interpret paintings hidden deep inside caves left by early man. It was an enlightening adventure! Also, as sixth graders, we had our first ever bully prevention kickoff! A great (and exhausting) day was had by all for such an important and meaningful issue!
Team 6C:
Students on Team 6C had the opportunity to interview members of the band, The Script, prior to their concert at Radio City Music Hall. The students prepared questions, learned lyrics to their hit songs, and took photos in the meet and greet room. It was an exciting interview where the band autographed phones and tickets. This was the first concert for the students and the floor seat tickets were amazing. The students wrote a review that was published in Kidsday. Be on the lookout for more articles written "by and for kids" in the upcoming weeks.
Team 6D:
Does the height from which you bounce a ball determine its bounce height? Does the brand of bubble gum impact the size of the bubble? Team 6D has been having a blast collecting data and drawing conclusions based on observations while learning about and practicing the steps of the scientific method!
Team 6E:
Team 6E worked with Jan Porinchak, our resident art teacher extraordinaire to create maps of Long Island. Students were surprised to learn, they in fact, live on an island. Students used a variety of resources to create their maps compass rose, keys, and scale. Students learned about our different counties, the Long Island Rail Road and the tunnels leading into Manhattan. Having interdisciplinary time in the sixth grade schedule makes these lesson possible. Smiles all around!
Team 6F:
In Social Studies, Team 6F has been learning about early hominids. We pieced together the skulls of different hominids which showed us how different in size and shape they all were. In ELA, we are beginning to write our personal narratives about our lives and are excited for our writers’ celebration in a few weeks! In Science, we’ve been perfecting our measurement skills using rulers, the triple beam balance, and graduated cylinders. We had fun break from multiplying fractions in math while creating a chain reaction at the OLWEUS kickoff!
Team 7A:
On October 20th students from Team 7A took a Circle Line Sightseeing cruise around lower Manhattan. Students saw and learned the history of Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the World Financial Center, Brooklyn Bridge, the United Nations, and the Intrepid. Students enjoyed the beautiful day and bonded with teammates and teachers.
TEAM 7B:
The Lexus Eco Challenge is a science research competition encouraging students to explore an environmental concern and then design and implement a plan to help remediate the issue. We explored the topic of de-algeanating our Long Island waters turning the algae into organic fertilizer. Excess algae harms aquatic ecosystems because it blocks sunlight, preventing photosynthesis. We took algae from local ponds and mixed it with carbon and nitrogen-rich materials in order to produce our very own organic fertilizer. We then sold it to our community and raised awareness about this serious issue. We also educated younger kids in the middle school to inspire them to follow in our footsteps, to take on this challenge and help solve a problem to better our environment.
Team 7C & 8C:
Team 7C and 8C have had quite an exciting October! In 7th grade science, students have been working on the scientific method and exploring what makes a "good" experiment. They created their own marshmallow catapults and developed hypotheses about what they thought might happen. Food always makes learning so much better! Algebra I students spent some time creating a web of equations to determine solutions to systems of equations. Next step will be taking the visual web and applying it to algebraic strategies.
The Olweus Kick-off once again made October a memorable month for all of us. We had a great time all around from listening to Rosalind Wiseman to racing around the track to an interactive Q & A with Aija Mayrock. All in all, it was a great day with friends and teammates. Team 7/8C doesn't stand by, we stand up!
Team 8A:
Our field trip to the Sunken Forest is a critical part of our investigation of Ecology and Ecosystems for Integrated Science students. Students worked in teams to actively investigate the interrelationships among the flora and fauna of this unique ecosystem. Photographs and materials collected at Fire Island are used in the completion of a major research project in school and for their yearlong Science Selfie picture project. for our Earth Science students Coastal Erosion, Sedimentation, Dune Formation, Meteorological Prediction and Ecosystem Analysis are a few of the topics that were addressed. The Sunken Forest also gives students a chance to experience a unique ecosystem found in only one other location on our planet.
