Spotlight Guideline of the Week!

What are guidelines?

The Texas Education Agency supports high-quality early learning that promotes kindergarten school readiness for Texas children. The state of Texas is invested in the identification and dissemination of well researched early childhood education instructional strategies. Supported through key partnerships with the Regional Education Service Centers, the Texas Early Learning Council, numerous licensed child care programs, including Head Start, Texas continues to raise the bar for quality early learning. These key partnerships laid the foundation for all investments through the adoption of the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines which emphasize research-based instructional strategies that are developmentally appropriate. Intended to support all students, these guidelines also work to inform teachers in addressing the specific needs of English language learners and students with disabilities.

THIS WEEKS SPOTLIGHT GUIDELINE: V.C.3. Child demonstrates use of location words (such as “over”,“under”, “above”,“on”,beside”,“next to”,“between”, “in front of”, “near”,“far”, etc.).

This week we learned about location words and how to use them. We met Mr. Location Puppet who loves location words. As he described his favorite location words, he even demonstrated the use of these words with his blanket. After we met Mr.Location Puppet, we read a story about a mouse's Halloween adventure with location words. When we understood what location words were, we played Simon Says! We sat under our tables, between our friends, next to the door, and even in front of our cubbies. We were having so much fun playing Simon Says with location words that we did not know we were learning! After Simon Says, we thought Mr. Location Puppet could use some new friends. We created our very own puppets. We showed the entire class our puppets and demonstrated a new location word we learned. After we finished with these activities, we were able to recognize location words when reading aloud (Ups & Downs), demonstrate locations when given instructions (Simon Says), and use location words correctly in a sentence (presenting puppets).

We read Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss and learned how to distinguish when two words rhyme. After we read the story and paired objects that rhyme, we made a Cat in the Hat mask! We even added words that rhyme with cat to our masks. At the end of this activity, we could produce a word that rhymes with a given word. One of us might be the next Dr. Seuss!

This week in art we learned about primary colors: red, blue and yellow. We learned which primary colors create a new color when mixed together. During science we mixed red, yellow, green, and blue to a small plate filled with milk and dish soap. As we touched the colors with a q-tip, there was a rainbow effect!

In honor of Veteran's Day (November 11th), we learned that a veteran is a brave man or woman who served in the military to keep us safe. We also learned about the Texas flag and the United States flag. We then drew the Texas flag and painted the United States flag, which we hung up in our room. After lunch, we had several veterans visit our school to talk to us about their services for our country. They made us feel thankful for their bravery, so we colored and drew thank you cards to send to other local veterans at CARE Nursing Center. After these activities, we understood what a veteran is, we could identify the Texas and United States flag, and we also developed a sense of pride for our country.

Happy Veteran's Day!
