What is happening at Glenwood, November 28, 2020
News from Dr. Cappucci
Students decorated kindness rocks last year, which have been spread around the Buddy Bench!
This is the plan for today, November 24, 2020.
We now know that we will remain remote until January 19th. We are only 52 days away from our return to school. We will continue to do our best to support all of our families and students. Please contact me with any concerns you may have. All teachers and administrators are only an email or phone call away.
1. Chromebook Request
If your own chromebook breaks, we still need parents to fill out the request. Please follow the link below if you need to borrow a Chromebook in order for your WRSD student to participate in remote or hybrid learning.
If a borrowed chromebook breaks, then we will replace it. Just contact Mrs. Johnstone at 508-886-0399.
We have lent out nearly all of our chromebooks at this point. Borrowing a chromebook may take a few extra weeks.
2. Internet Access Assistance
If you DO NOT have home internet access and would like assistance, please follow the link below.
Request Help with Internet Access
3. Additional Technology Support
To assist with some of the challenges of remote learning, we have developed a technology support website for families. It contains basic information on accessing the major learning platforms our students will use and also provides a means by which parents can contact the technology staff for support. Please follow the link below to visit the site.

News from Mrs. Pope, School Psychologist Intern
Understanding a child’s point of view, is the best way to learn how to support their growing needs and focus on building a positive relationship with them. All humans learn through “play”, and learning remotely, makes it difficult to do that in the ways that we are accustomed to. All of our social and emotional development is lacking right now, but there are many ways to foster our wants for connection, and be able to use our creativity to do something about it.
During remote learning, the questions below can start a conversation about school at the end of the day or during breaks. Reflection can help build skills for children to intuitively understand what is going on around them and when needed utilize coping skills to work through it.
Discussion that engages social cues and body language
What was going on in the group?
What are the rules of the group?
What is interesting about the group?
What do you know about each person?
What would you like to know more about?
Discussion that engages mindfulness “birds eye view”
Who is in this group?
How do I “step in others shoes” in this group?
How are others reacting to my behaviors or messages?
What are others likes or dislikes
What do I think is going on in others lives?
What did I notice about another persons reaction to a situation?
How did that make me feel?
How are others behaving, how am I behaving, is there a difference?
If there is a difference: is it good or not so great
If your child provides information about their difficulties or frustrations, begin by using listening and communications skills that demonstrate you understand how hard it is
(“I hear you” “that must be hard” “I am____ that you are feeling _____”)
Family Fun Weekly Activities:
Gratitude is a good Contagion to spread this Thanksgiving
Create a compliment Jar:
Cut out scraps of paper
Write the person’s name on one side
Write the compliment you want to give them on the other
Fold it up and put it in the jar
Empty the jar every week and discuss the compliments
You can also add “Things I am grateful for” to this jar
Have the children in the family interview the elders of the family, to find out what their lives were like when they were young.
As a family you could create a list of questions to ask before hand
News from Mrs. Lawton
State public health officials announced that influenza immunization will be required for all children 6 months of age or older who are attending Massachusetts child care, pre-school, kindergarten, K-12, and colleges and universities. The new vaccine requirement is an important step to reduce flu-related illness and the overall impact of respiratory illness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Students will be expected to have received a flu vaccine by December 31, 2020 for the 2020-2021 influenza season, unless either a medical or religious exemption is provided. Also exempted are K-12 students who are homeschooled and higher education students who are completely off-campus and engaged in remote learning only. This new flu immunization requirement to enter school in January is in addition to existing vaccine requirements for all those attending child care, preschool, K-12, and colleges and universities in Massachusetts.
COVID Checklist for Parents
Dear Glenwood Parents & Guardians,
To help families prepare for the eventual return to in-person learning, it is important that the following information pertaining to student illness is reviewed before students start school. As the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the medical community learn more about COVID-19, it is possible that this guidance will change. The information below is based on the most recent, reliable medical guidance.
Parents whose child has one or more of the following signs/symptoms of illness, that are also associated with COVID-19, should keep their child home from school. It is also recommended that parents contact their primary care physician for further evaluation:
Fever of 100.0° F or higher accompanied by chills
Persistent cough that is not due to another known cause such as chronic cough
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Headache in combination with other symptoms listed here
Muscle aches or body aches
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Fatigue in combination with other symptoms listed here
Nasal congestion or runny nose that is not due to other known causes such as allergies and is in combination with other symptoms listed here
Click here for the CDC’s COVID-19 Information Page
The following information, related to when child(ren) may return to school, is based on the WRSD School Reopening Plan and Department of Health guidance:
If a student is referred for further medical evaluation for symptoms of illness, they may only return to school with a note from their doctor or following a 10-day quarantine IF symptoms have improved AND they are fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
Close contact is defined by the CDC as someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic clients, 2 days prior to positive specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.
If a student is considered to be a close contact, they may only return to school following a 14-day quarantine period, even if a negative COVID-19 test result is received.
It is recommended that anyone who is considered close contact gets tested for COVID-19 four to five days following exposure. If a student has tested positive for COVID-19, they may return to school 10 days following documentation of the start of symptoms if they are fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication AND if their symptoms have improved.
Important: All documentation must be faxed or emailed to the health office prior to returning to school.
As the District refines and finalizes school reopening plans, it is understood that there may be situations unique for families that require further discussion. Your child’s school nurse is available to discuss these situations, as well as to provide further explanation for the protocols outlined in this message. Please be aware that the WRSD school nurses have been integral in shaping the District’s protocols and procedures related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and they are a valuable resource for parents and guardians.
I appreciate the questions and concerns that have arisen in our outreach to the families of students. Our ability to work together and collaborate during this difficult period of time is integral to our success.
Just a Reminder that school lunches are free for all students through June 2021. I know students are all missing our delicious school lunches and it could be a treat after working hard all morning!
School Lunches
YOUR MEAL PICK UP WILL BEGIN ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1st from 3-4pm
IMPORTANT UPDATE- Due to health & safety concerns, we are no longer able to place meals inside vehicles. You must park your car, and come to the designated meal pick up area. Limit of two people at the table at one time and masks are required!
As we can not afford to waste food, it is extremely important to understand that your commitment to needing meals is to pick up on BOTH Tuesdays and Thursday evenings from 3:00-4:00pm of every week.
Should there be a reason why you or someone else can not pick up meals for you, please let us know so that we do not prepare these meals that you've ordered and have them go to waste. Should you not show up, we will remove you from our list.
The WRSD food service department is dependent upon the support of our families to stay 'a float' as we operate independent of the town budgets. The USDA has graciously extended universal free meals through June 2021! We need you to continue to get meals whether we are in school or remote.
Lunch Menus are always posted on the Glenwood Website.
