Principal's Post - A Weekly Note From Mr. Ortman
It has been quite a winter, Mill Creek! After hardly seeing a flake of snow during the 2019-2020 school year, it seems that "snowmaggedon" is upon us this school year! While it is nice to have an actual winter, the weather can be a disruptive force to learning without our community resilience and tenacity. Virtual learning options have allowed us to minimize the disruption to learning when Mill Creek needs to close for weather, but teacher/staff and student commitment to engaging through that online platform, when necessary, is essential for that learning to continue. Thank you to our teachers, support staff, and students for that engagement. Additionally, thank you to our Mill Creek families for helping our children find a place to work and focus when full school virtual learning is required.
I hope you had a chance to enjoy the snow. Although, admittedly, I am starting to think spring!

From the Desk of Mr. Murtha
A few weeks back, I wrote about the February celebration of Black History Month, which is about to enter its final week. While Black History Month puts focus on black citizens, it also reminds us of the importance of striving towards cultural proficiency with many minority populations in the world and especially the United States. I have been excited to see classroom lessons that focus not only on black culture but on the larger topic of diversity. Mr. Chapman's presentation, featured to start our newsletter, is one example. Another example is the opportunity I had to observe students painting Native American-inspired landscapes, as featured in Tomie DePaola's book, The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush, in their art class. I work to honor diversity throughout the year, but Black History Month serves as a reminder, and, in all honesty, I think it reminds me to open my eyes more to truly "see" diversity in our community and in the learning we provide. Central Bucks teachers and administrators recently engaged in professional development work on diversity, some of which involved culturally proficient teaching approaches, which will help to engage all students. Our individual student's cultural, ethnic, and racial perspectives carry rich information that can benefit all students, and a responsibility we have as educators is to help our students feel comfortable sharing their personal stories and perspectives, as well as see that their culture, ethnicity, and race are represented in what they learn. The latter, especially, will allow all students to relate to the material they learn each day and, in turn, be more engaged and better learners.
I encourage the Mill Creek Community to continue to celebrate many amazing black citizens as we enter the final week of Black History Month and to keep our eyes open to the rich diversity around us through February 28 and beyond!
