General SOAR information

Parents we ask you to please take a moment to complete the 2021 Parent Survey. Your feedback is critical in helping to shape the future of your child's education. Please complete one survey per grade level for each child that you have in your home. Surveys are available in both English and Spanish.

Conscious Discipline Connections with Mrs. Carmen

This month we will focus on the skill of Assertiveness. We teach others how to treat us in all of our relationships. Assertiveness is the heart of discipline: Setting clear limits on your child’s behavior is the key discipline skill you must cultivate. Your style of setting limits teaches your child how to set and hold boundaries in all of their future relationships.

Are you Passive, Aggressive, or Assertive? Learning to distinguish between speech or actions that are assertive, aggressive or passive is the first step toward assertiveness. Passivity invites aggression, aggression begets aggression and assertiveness dissipates aggression. The goal of passivity is to please others. A passive person’s speech and actions say, “Approve of me. Agree with me. Love me.” Examples of passive speech include, “Just let me finish this, then mommy will talk to you.” It asks permission; “time for a bath, okay?”.

Aggressive communication aims to win by overpowering. “Winning” means getting the other person to do what we want them to do. Ex: “I said get in the bath now.” It communicates, do it, or else. Assertiveness is clear communication of what we want others to do. It has a voice tone of “no doubt” and more importantly comes from an intentions of helping children to be successful. Ex: “It’s time to get in the bath. Would you like to walk or skip to the bathroom?” In order to successfully use assertiveness, you must use your Power of Attention, focusing on what you want the child to do!

Assertiveness is the main skill you will use to set limits for your children. Assertiveness is very powerful skill that lets you set boundaries with others, and helps you teach our children to set boundaries. These boundaries model and teach the value of respect. Give it a try this month and let me know how it goes. I’d love to hear from you!

From my heart to your heart, I wish you well on this parenting journey,

Mrs. Carmen

Grade Level Announcements

4th grade has started reading a novel called Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Writing continues to be the focus during small group instruction. In Science we're learning about Space Exploration.

In our music classes, we are using the Quaver curriculum. Students can access Quaver through their BPS Launchpad at home, too. Once they open the program, there are lots of fun activities they can do, like exploring music on Quaver Street and in Quaver’s store, reading e-books about music, going to “concerts” through the Metro, and even accessing the lessons we do at school to share songs with their families. If you have any questions about Quaver, please contact Mrs. Dickman.

1st grade, Mrs. Gooch's class did a "Retell Restaurant". It was a restaurant themed retelling activity of our main story. Afterwards students went to the book buffet with a partner to chose a book using real tongs to pick up the book just like in a restaurant. Students read stories with their partner and made retelling sandwiches that were sent home in a to go box!

2020 Tax forms for parents of students enrolled in the Brevard After School program are available at via the Parent Portal. Please contact Mr. Jason Cromer by email or call direct at 321-253-5041.
