Foods in the Grains Group
Some of the foods included in the grains group are pasta, rice, and bread.
Two Sub Groups
The two sub groups within the grains group are whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains are made with the entire grains kernel and refined grains have been milled which removes the bran and germ.
Brown rice is a whole grain.
White flour is a refined grain.
What is an Ounce of Grain?
Three examples of an ounce of grain are 1 slice of bread, a half cup of cooked rice, or a half cup of cooked pasta.
Nutrients
Three of the benefits that are received from eating grains are dietary fiber from whole grains which can reduce blood cholesterol. Whole grains are also sources of magnesium which is used to build bones and release energy from your muscles. Lastly, folate helps the body form red blood cells and can be found in bread and pasta.
Health Benefits
Four of the health benefits that come with eating grains are the reduction of the risk of heart disease, they can reduce constipation, they help with weight management, and eating them before or during a pregnancy can help prevent neural tube defects during the fetal development.

Five of the ways that a nutrition label can display whole grains ingredients are by listing ingredients such as rolled oats, whole wheat, whole rye, whole oats, and wild rice.
