A Letter from Your Principal, Mrs. Kellogg
Mustang Families,
I hope this communication finds you doing well. We are now into the 4th week of school, and we are beginning to get into a routine. The first couple of weeks is always a little chaotic as we adjust schedules and get back into habits. Student energy is permeating throughout the building and is uplifting and reminds us of our “WHY.” Even though we are still dealing with COVID, it feels a little more like “normal” than it has for the past three years. It is wonderful to have athletics in person and hang out with students and the community. If you have not had a chance to attend an event and can find some time, please join us in supporting our student-athletes. Soon our performing arts, band, and choir will also have their performances and I can’t wait to see them.
We have lots of fun activities coming up this week with homecoming starting on Monday, October 3. Students kicked off the fun last Friday by staying after school to decorate their playhouses for the parade this coming Friday. There was laughter, hard work, and a lot of progress. The students have also been working so hard on their lip syncs and I can’t wait to see their final product at the assembly. Remember, there is a different themed dress up day the whole week. Encourage your students to show their spirit.
We really want to engage our community differently this year. We want to meet with our families and find out what you want to know more about. As a way to engage the community this year, we are going to have opportunities to meet together and learn together. We will be having our first Principal Coffee Talk in October. Stay tuned for more details. These events will continue to happen throughout the year. With that being said, instead of doing our traditional open house event, this year we will put out a website that has each teacher's syllabus and a welcome video with an explanation of their classes. This way you can always have this information at your fingertips. Also, it won’t be long until you are going to get information about conferences that will take place in November.
Our goal is to have our students feel seen, safe, and cared for. I understand that this doesn’t just happen, it is something that we have to continually work on and towards as a staff and a school community. We will continue to learn about one another and will grow together. I am so hopeful for this year!
Be well,
Kim Kellogg
COUNSELING
PreACT / PSAT/College & Career Day
We are excited to announce that our virtual college and career fair is 10 days away. On October 12th, high school students from across the district will have a variety of opportunities to tune into live sessions from their chrome books at home and view important college and career related sessions. These sessions will include topics such as college talks from specific universities in the area; applying to college, financial aid and scholarships; and learning more about opportunities in the workforce and trades.
The day will have opportunities for engagement just like a normal day but students will participate from home virtually. Our schools will be open for all 10th graders who are taking the PreACT and for some 11th graders who have chosen to sign up for the PSAT. For more information about these tests see the previous communication that was sent out below.
During the time leading up to October 12th we are encouraging families to plan their day together and select the sessions that make sense for you and your family. Parents, we highly encourage your participation. This is especially helpful for information about Financial Aid or understanding the opportunities that are available in the trades. Session schedules will be sent out next week. For those that can’t tune in live, we will have access to recordings of these sessions to be viewed at a later date.
For test takers, school will start as usual at 8:35 and the test and school day will end at 12:00. We will serve lunch at 12:00 and for bus riders, we are coordinating the timing for buses to depart soon after lunch.
The following message was sent earlier this month and has details regarding the Pre ACT and PSAT:
College and Career Day is on October 12th, 2022! This is an exciting day for our secondary programs to roll out and expand our 6th thru 12th grade college and career planning. Students will have the opportunity to explore college and career based lessons and explorations that are age appropriate. Students and families can expect to see activities that range from starting to brainstorm career opportunities, to writing college essays and applying for scholarships.
In addition to college and career activities we will offer the Pre ACT for all sophomores. This is part of Oregon Department of Education’s requirements to offer a nationally normed college entrance practice exam available to all 10th graders across the state. This has been the case for many years now and the state recently contracted with ACT instead of the college board which offers the PSAT.
For 9th grade, some students will join us for targeted support by ninth grade teams. All 9th graders will be able to access the virtual college and career fair organized by North Clackamas School District.
All 10th graders will attend school for a half day to take the PreACT, while all other students will engage in synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning from home that day. In addition, there will be some in-person opportunities such as the PSAT for 11th graders referenced above that will be optional. Students will have a menu of offerings to select from and we invite parents to join their students in these sessions which are quite helpful for families navigating the college and career process.
We are also happy to provide an opportunity for 11th graders that have already signed up to take the PSAT exam. While this is not a requirement, we do realize that the PSAT can provide an opportunity for additional recognition.
For the 12th graders we will offer support with College Applications, Financial Aid and FAFSA, Naviance, post-high school planning and more in the MHS Commons from 8:35am to 12:00pm. Please bring questions and chromebooks!
For now, mark your calendars for October 12th. Specific schedules will come out soon. All 10th graders will attend in person. All other grades will primarily be at home and participate online with their Chromebooks.

ATHLETICS
Hello Mustang Family,
We have reached the midway point of our fall season. Our girls soccer team is off to an undefeated season with a record of 4-0-2 and ranked 5th in State! Our boys soccer has found a few wins on the road and is very excited to start league play. Football is currently 3-1 with a last second, no time on the clock Touchdown to beat our Miwaukie rivals from LaSalle Prep HS. Volleyball is nearing the midway point of their league season and has a huge game coming up vs. Centennial. Cross Country has had a banner season with the largest team we have had in years and our senior Logan Law is leading his team to top three finishes as a team and a threat to win every race he enters, please get out and support the cross country team.
We are loving all the support our athletes are getting this fall season as we are seeing big crowds at all events and cannot thank you fans enough for showing up to support the Mustangs. As we transition to November next month we will move into winter sports season and currently we are in our “open” period in which our spring and winter sports can workout with interested athletes six hours a week until tryouts begin November 14th, 2022. Be sure to check our website for updated tryout information. We cannot wait to see how our seasons wrap up here in the fall and please keep following our schedules and results here at the links below or on www.milwaukieathletics.com

MAA
MHS/MAA Thespians will be participating in "Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat," where our students will trick or treat for canned goods and other non-perishable food items on October 31. The items collected will be donated to the Wichita Center, which provides support for students and families in the North Clackamas School District. If families would like to donate, they can arrange this by contacting Laura Steenson (steensonl@nclack.k12.or.us).
The first play of the year is The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon. Featuring the work of more than 40 MHS and MAA theatre students, this madcap farce is guaranteed to get the whole family laughing. Performances are November 3-5 and tickets will be available online through our facebook page, Milwaukie Mustang Theatre, by mid-October.
The Fall Instrumental Music Concert is Wednesday, October 26 at 6:30pm in the Arts Auditorium. Everyone is welcome! You’ve had some sneak peaks with live music at our football games, but this is a real deal concert.
The Fall Vocal Music Concert is Thursday, October 20 at 7pm. Invite your friends and neighbors, it is so nice to see and hear our talented students in person. Did we mention, it’s free?!
The ninth graders in ArtsLab have been working on creating presentations that incorporate identity and personal reflection. No surprise, they are beautiful and unique. They are constructing the foundation of building portfolios and sharing creative work.

Dental sealants protect teeth from food impaction and dental decay
A sealed tooth is far less likely to develop a cavity
Dental sealants are not fillings, they are a preventative treatment
Dental sealants take 10-15 minutes to apply
A properly placed dental sealant can last a lifetime protecting the back teeth!
