2021 Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson MS
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy President’s Day Falcons!
I hope you’ve all had a chance to enjoy our wild weather this weekend! I was outside with my boys soaking up how nice it was to see all four of them working together to make jumps for their sleds and other snow structures. It was refreshing to see all the neighborhood kids outside and hear all the joyful sounds they make while playing in the snow. On our street, even though they were all grouped in their home groups, it felt like a return to normalcy, at least a little bit, to see kids playing in the street with all of their store bought and homemade sled variations. It reminded me that we’re closing in one one year of not being in the building for school, but that there’s hope that we’ll return sooner rather than later.
This time of year is always exciting because we start talking about forecasting for next year. Each grade level has some unique pieces that make this year more complex for forecasting than years past including; 8th grade students need to go through the forecasting activities on Canvas, 6th and 7th grade students will be forecasting in March for the middle school they are assigned to for next year based on the new middle school boundaries, 7th grade families have until February 26th to decide if they want to stay at their current middle school or go to their new school, and all students are going to have a different schedule next year than we’ve had at the middle school level in a very long time. 8th grad students already have access to the tutorials in canvas to help them understand how to forecast for high school, and all the high school counselors met with students this past week to answer questions and provide information about high school. Please visit the website for each school if you have questions, they have created detailed 9th grade forecasting pages to help walk families through the process! 6th and 7th grade students will begin having “pre-forecasting” lessons in advisory beginning next week.
Many parents that took our parent survey said they would like help talking to their students about mental health and addiction issues. We will be having a series of parent information/training sessions beginning the first week of March. One session will be hosted by our own mental health professionals on staff, the other sessions will be led by Washington County Health Dept. professionals. Stay tuned for more information!
This week the schedule is a little different:
2/15/21 - no school Presidents Day
2/17/21 - Synchronous day - students will have all classes this day
2/18/21 - PTO meeting
Have a great week! As always please reach out with questions or concerns kelly_cox@beaverton.k12.or.us.

8TH GRADERS
Attention all 8th grade families!
On Tuesday February 9th, during core 1, your student will be participating in a meeting to learn all about the experience they will have as a high school 9th grader! Each of our high schools will be sending counselors to talk with students and start the process of guiding them through course choices they will have for next year. Your student will be provided virtual materials and oriented to resources that will help in the forecasting process. We are asking that all forecasting course selections be completed by March 5th.
In preparation of this event, advisory teachers have communicated to your students about which high school they are scheduled to attend. If you still have questions about this or didn’t receive communication, please reach out to your advisory teacher and they can help make sure that you have the up to date information about your boundary school. Tuesday morning at 8:00 we will send out a Canvas announcement that will contain the links to all of the virtual forecasting sessions. Please note that even if your student is planning on attending an option school, we will ask that they complete the forecasting process for their boundary high school. All option program forecasting will take place after commitments are finalized.
We know that many of you will have questions about what this will look like and I encourage you to attend the forecasting sessions with you students on Tuesday if you are able. Alternatively, many parent Q & A sessions for high schools across our district will be hosting parent information and curriculum evenings and we will push out these important dates through all of our communication channels as the information becomes available to us.
We look forward to making this experience the best for your student and family. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your 8th grade counselor should you have any questions about forecasting.

Parents and Guardians:
Our registrar began notifying you of needed immunizations starting in September. Please get the immunizations done at your provider's office and return the completed paperwork to the school.
On January 13th, Washington County Health Department was sent a list of students who are not up to date. The County will send you an exclusion notice. Your child will not be excluded from CDL but when we do return to in person learning, your student will not be able to attend until they are up to date and the school has received written notice.
Absences for exclusion are considered unexcused. It can be very difficult to get an appointment with a provider for several weeks before exclusion so please get this done now! It is also the perfect time to get a flu shot for your child if you have not already done so.
