Coffee talk with Mr. Guzman
As we prepare for winter break, I want to take a few moments to reflect on the first few months of the 2017-2018 school year. Over these last months, we have watched the students grow and learn, something we hope they will continue to do well beyond the four years they will spend with us. Since my arrival at MHS, we have implemented this Blue Jay Broadcast, a newsletter that we hope you find helpful and informative. It will continue to evolve as we add new sections and bring you more ways to interact with the school and its administration. We’ve created a Twitter account and there are Twitter and Instagram accounts created by teachers, classes and activities which we’ve listed below and will continue to add to. We will continue to introduce technology into the classroom and challenge the students to develop skills in a digital world.
I will continue to use my Coffee Talk as a space to share ideas and information that I believe is beneficial to all of those involved in our student education. They may not always be comfortable topics but in a diverse world, it is important to understand what is going on and how we can be sure our students continue to thrive. As we look forward, we can all use the winter break as a time to reenergize and prepare for the second half of the school year.
On behalf of the school administration, I wish all of our Blue Jay families a very happy holiday season. We’ll see the students on January 2nd when school reopens.

News & Notes
The Fashion Club held it's annual Christmas Boutique Sale on Dec 13th, 14th and 18th. The sale was set up after school and was a good opportunity for students to purchase jewelry and other small items as presents.
On December 20th, Maschio's hosted a Chef-to-School Breakfast with Chef Glen. He prepared made-to-order deli-style egg sandwiches including pork roll, egg and cheese - a New Jersey favorite!
Auditions for this year's Spring Musical, Legally Blonde The Musical, will be in January. All the information interested students need is posted on the bulletin board outside of Room 101. If students have any questions, they should see Ms. Siegrist in Room 104.
Spirit points are earned throughout the year, culminating in a year-end trip for the class with the most spirit points. Before leaving for the holiday, points were available for Ugly Sweater Day and the Junior class won - congratulations!
“The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.” credit: hourofcode.org
For our Hour of Code event we had students of all different abilities – from beginner to skilled coder – come to engage with and celebrate computer science. Participants chose from a variety of tutorials and activities available on the hourofcode.org website. We also had several “unplugged” stations (no computer required!) – like our Robot Maze – that helped students to learn, and got them thinking about, several basic principles of computer science.
Academic Highlights
In addition to this, each year the You and the Law class attends Superior Court at the Middlesex County Courthouse. The students see a criminal or civil trial and then have the opportunity to speak with the presiding judge and attorneys to ask questions about the case and/or the participants' role in the trial. Once the trial phase is complete, the court administrators inform them of the verdict and the class will analyze the case and speculate as to how and why the jury came to it's decision.

Did You Know?
"To you, the first graduating class of Middlesex High School, has fallen the responsibility of having implanted ideas and ideals which will guide future students into unknown areas. Wherever life may lead you, may you always remember the fundamentals which you bestowed as part of the future heritage of Middlesex High."
