We are so excited to be preparing to welcome students back to school for hybrid instruction! We are planning to start our new schedule on Tuesday, April 20th. Here are a few important things to know about hybrid instruction at RLA:
- Students will be assigned to Group A or Group B
- Tuesday and Wednesday- Group B has classes on the computer in the morning and Group A comes to school for live classes in the afternoon.
- Thursday and Friday- Group A has classes on the computer in the morning and Group B comes to school for live classes in the afternoon.
- Students who are staying in distance learning have classes on the computer every morning Tuesday-Friday.
- While we are at school, we need to wear masks and stay at least 6 feet apart from everybody else at all times.
- When you come to school, bring a fully charged chromebook, the charging cord, pens and pencils, a notebook and a water bottle. Dress to go outside.
- On Thursday, April 15th and Friday, April 16th students will have assignments in Schoology, but they will not have live classes in Teams. On Monday, April 19th students will not have a live Advisory class.
- Our new schedule starts on Tuesday, April 20. On that day, students in cohort B and CDL should log into classes in teams starting at 10:00 AM and ending at 11:45 AM. Students in cohort A will report to school at 12:35.
- Check your student email to find out if you are in cohort A or cohort B

We can’t wait to see you!

Lines for Life
Let's practice our Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage our emotions.
Emotional intelligence is sometimes called EQ (or EI) for short. EQ helps us build strong relationships, make good decisions, and deal with difficult situations. One way to think about EQ is that it's part of being people-smart. Understanding and getting along with people helps us be successful in almost any area of life. In fact, some studies show that EQ is more important than IQ when it comes to doing well in school or being successful at work.
Let's Practice!
- Self-Awareness: Stop, sit down and just reflect on how you are feeling right now. Be as specific as possible. Think about why you're feeling that way.
Being aware of emotions — simply noticing them as we feel them — helps us manage our own emotions. It also helps us understand how other people feel. But some people might go through the entire day without really noticing their emotions. Practice recognizing emotions as you feel them. Label them in your mind (for example, by saying to yourself "I feel grateful," "I feel frustrated," etc.).
2.Understanding How Others Feel and Why
Being able to imagine what emotions a person is likely to be feeling (even when you don't actually know) is called empathy. Empathy helps us care about others and build good friendships and relationships. It guides us on what to say and how to behave around someone who is feeling strong emotions.

I bet you never heard of Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett
Dr, Corbett and her team have been instrumental in developing the Moderna vaccine for Covid-19. They were actually working on a vaccine for similar viruses such as SARS and MERS for 6 years before Covid.
Dr. Corbett became a Scientist at the age of 16. “It is important to me to have made this history and particularly to stand in the forefront for people like myself, to really help every- one, not just in the U.S. but also the world, to see Black women in a different light—as innovators in technology and science,” she says.
- Gio Peña, Science
Last week I talked about the different types of vaccines and how mRNA vaccines are different and cool! I even mentioned that mRNA vaccines are over 50 years in the making. I want to use this week to explore the history of mRNA vaccines. I'll be honest, I did not know much about mRNA vaccines (like most of us) until after news of them came out. I, like most of you, had many questions, so I started to explore. A vaccine that comes out in "less than a year" sounds scary! It sounds like steps were skipped! But that is because we are ignoring a massive wealth of knowledge built by science over the span of DECADES!
Did you know that mRNA vaccines were studied as early as the 1970's? That's right, 1970. So why did it take SO LONG for it to be used in humans. Well, it turns out that it is HARD to get mRNA into our body without our body breaking it down. The reason mRNA is so great is because it is a blueprint for your body to make something. Every protein in our body is made from mRNA. We can use this to our advantage as we have done with COVID. There is a catch though. Getting mRNA into the body and getting your body to "print" the directions is HARD. It wasn't until 2018 that we had all of the parts figured out to start making mRNA vaccines. Even though you're probably didn't hear about them unit 2020, Scientists have been conducting human trials to use mRNA to fight/cure other viruses, bacteria's and even some cancers since 2018. The potential of mRNA vaccines is HUGE!
But don't take my work for it! This week's video is from the science show and my friend Hank goes into the details about the history of mRNA vaccines. Go to YouTube directly if you want to explore the sources he uses for state his claims (all good science is sourced!). And as always feel free to message me (gpena@rsd7.net) if you have any questions, I love to talk science!
