# Kindergarten News Sanders Street

## Highlights From Last Week....

We had a very productive week of learning.

In Reader's Workshop, we continued to look at the picture AND the first letter of the word to see if it makes sense! Our reading stamina has plateaued at 15 minutes, which is still great! We continued to practice our other strategies as well: looking at the picture while we read, trading out books, practicing turning and talking.

In Math, we continued our unit on shapes. We learned what the shapes are and what characteristics make them what shape. For instance, a triangle has three sides and three vertices.

In Phonics, we practiced letter sounds and learned the sight words "play" and "here", please practice these words at home. Our letters of the week were "V" & "W".

In our Second Step program, we continued to learn about our own feelings.

We read several fall related books and used our strategies to retell some of the stories.

We had a special guest this week. A nursing student from Fitchburg State had been working with our school nurse. This week she read a book and taught a lesson about dental hygiene. Everyone even got to go home with a tooth brushing chart and a toothbrush.

Homework:

Great job working with your child on their homework! As a reminder, homework will go home Monday, please make be sure to return it to school on Friday.

HELP!!

Our classroom is filling up with clothes that have no home! Please LABEL EVERYTHING!! If your child is missing sweatshirts or lunch boxes, please let me know.

Reminder NO toys at school!

Thank you!!

Thank you for all that you do!!! Keep up the great work!!

The book order went in on Friday that should be here next week.

We want to say a thank you to Mrs. Moomaw who has been doing some pre practicum hours in our classroom. It has been great to have the extra set of hands. She was able to help us make a shape pizza. They are looking very yummy on our classroom wall.

If anyone ever wants to come in to volunteer let us know!

In the next few weeks I will be working on sending home some just right books for you readers to practice reading at home. They are getting very excited about all the books they can read!

I have received a donation of small stuffed animals from a close family friend. The kids are working very hard to move their clips to pink so that they can take one home. There are enough for all the students to earn one!

## Notes from Mrs. Maillet

It was so great to see most of you at conferences! As I mentioned, please have your child decorate a shoe box to hold their "just right" books that I will be sending home weekly. I will send the first book home on Monday. Please read these books nightly to increase fluency. Thank you in advance for you help at home.

Book orders went home this week. Thank you for your support.
