Girls
On Tuesday, junior Alivia Ahner traveled to Penn High School in Mishawaka to compete in the IHSAA Diving Regional. Alivia was one of 20 student athletes to qualify coming from 5 different sectionals around the northern part of the state and the FIRST girl diver from Hobart in over 20 years! Each competitor dove 11 times at the regional with the top 8 scores advancing to the STATE FINALS in Indianapolis. Alivia was FANTASTIC on Tuesday night ... just as she was ALL SEASON ... and placed 17th overall with a score of 217.15! Unfortunately, she did not finish with enough points to advance; however, this was JUST THE BEGINNING! Even though her winter dive season is over, Alivia ... only a junior ... has improved EVERY season over her high school career, which means next winter will be AMAZING!!
GREAT JOB ALIVIA!! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!
#LICENSETODIVE
On Friday, junior PHENOM Emma Wright got back into the water at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis where she won the 2019 IHSAA State Championship in the 100-yd Freestyle last February. Emma has been a WARRIOR all year and was back to claim some more hardware to add to her collection.
In Friday night's preliminary heats, Emma swam well and qualified for the FINALS in the 100-yd Freestyle again with a time of 50.86 to earn the 5th-seed and a spot in lane 2 for Saturday's championship! For the 2nd year in a row, she ALSO qualified for the consolation race in the 50-yd Freestyle going 23.73.
On Saturday, as she typically does in competition, Emma came back DETERMINED and dropped time in BOTH events! In the 50, Emma placed 2nd in the consolation round and her time of 23.53 was fast enough for 10th place overall in the STATE! In the 100, she looked FANTASTIC and improved her time from the night before by over .3 seconds as she touched the wall at 50.52 and earned her 2nd consecutive ALL-STATE MEDAL by placing 3RD OVERALL!! The race was FAST ... as is to be expected at the STATE FINALS ... and Emma performed LIKE A CHAMPION! Thanks to her efforts, the Hobart Lady Brickies finished 22nd in the state and she indeed brought home some additional hardware for her personal trophy case!
2019-2020 was a season to remember for Emma! She broke even more school, conference and sectional records on her way to the FINALS and ALWAYS represented the PURPLE & GOLD with PRIDE!
CONGRATULATIONS ON ANOTHER OUTSTANDING YEAR EMMA! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!!

Wrestling
Each weight class had 16 competitors. The top 4 individuals in each class advance to the STATE FINALS next weekend at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. In order to secure a spot in the top 4, a wrestler needs to win 2 matches. Here we go!
The first round was MAGNIFICENT for the Brickies as 10 of our 11 were VICTORIOUS!! Of the 10, 8 wins were by pin! The "ticket round" was crazy. The Brickies wrestled with EVERYTHING they had and REPRESENTED this blue-collar town on the lake with PRIDE! Overall, Hobart scored 56 points as a team and finished 6th overall!
Two of our boys were able to earn a 2nd round VICTORY and ADVANCE!!
Here are their stories ...
At 106 lbs, freshman Trevor Triana ... after winning a 2-0 decision in the 1st round ... WON in sudden victory after he and his opponent went 3 periods and 2 OTs knotted at 0-0! Trevor was able to ride out the 30 second sudden victory time to secure his spot in the STATE FINALS!! Trevor lost a tough one in the semifinals, but considering he began the year on "injured reserve" with a broken hand, an appearance in the STATE FINALS and a shot at bringing home a medal is AMAZING! GREAT JOB TREVOR!!
At 152 lbs, junior Tyler Turley ... after winning by fall in the 1st round ... WON a 13-10 decision to punch his ticket to Indianapolis! Tyler got up early, then had to fight off a furious charge from his opponent to earn the win! With his state finals berth already secured, Tyler WON A THRILLER in the semifinals over a previous semi-state champion, getting a turn and ride out in the 3rd period to win 2-0 to advance to the championship round! In the finals, Tyler lost a HARD FOUGHT match to undefeated senior Garrett Stuckman from Wawasee, but WHAT A FINISH to set him up for next week! GREAT JOB TYLER!!
Next weekend, the Brickies will bring TNT TIMES TWO ... Trevor Triana & Tyler Turley ... to INDIANAPOLIS for the STATE FINALS!! Triana joins his older brother Tyler in the "state qualifier" club as both he and Turley make their 1st appearances at Bankers Life Fieldhouse!
1st round action begins Friday night at 6 PM EST with the quarterfinals starting Saturday morning at 9:30 AM EST.
DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!

Basketball
Tuesday night, Hobart hosted area top 10 team Hanover Central, who entered the game with a 17-1 record on the year. On paper, the Wildcats were the favorite ... but that's why we play the game folks! The Brickies were well-prepared and played some stifling D-D-D-DEFENSE, holding Hanover to 13 1st quarter points - well below their season average. Hobart kept pace on the offensive end as well and trailed by only 3 after the 1st frame. The 2nd period was more of the same as each team BATTLED for EVERY loose ball, rebound ... you name it, these kids were GOING AFTER IT! Down 25-21 at the half, the Brickies came out of the locker room FIRED UP and continued to WORK WORK WORK collectively to upend the favored Wildcats and after 3 quarters, the score was Hanover 38, Hobart 32. After 24 minutes, it was anyone's game! Unfortunately, the visitors were finally able to get some breathing room with about 3 minutes remaining and Hanover hit FTs down the stretch to ice it, winning a tough one over our boys 51-38. The Brickies gave a TREMENDOUS effort ... and even though we came up a bit short, BRICKIE PRIDE was on full display as Hobart stood toe-to-toe with one of the area's best. Senior Caleb Banjoff scored 16 points to lead the offensive attack. Classmate Tyler Schultz and sophomore Anthony Williams each added 7 in the loss.
On Friday night, our boys headed over to 5959 Broadway to face NCC rival and defending Class 2A state champion Andrean. In a competitive 1st quarter, Andrean held the ball for the last shot and scored at the buzzer to take a 15-10 lead. The 2nd frame offered more of the same with Hobart attacking the 59er full court pressure and defending against what seemed like an endless amount of pick-n-roll! Andrean ended the half on a 5-0 run and led 35-20 at the break. The Brickies started the 3rd exactly how Coach Brown drew it up ... with a stop and a score (3-pointer by Banjoff) to cut the lead down to 12! That was as close as Hobart would get the rest of the way as Andrean answered with a 3 of their own and never looked back. Senior Caleb Banjoff and sophomore Anthony Williams paced the Brickies with 13 apiece in the 71-40 defeat.
Saturday night, the Brickies were again ROAD WARRIORS as they visited our neighbor to the north, River Forest. Fortunately, the Ingots provided the perfect medicine to cure Hobart's 3-game skid and our boys SHINED on both ends of the floor! When the Brickies headed south of Ridge Road towards home, the nets were still burning in Bill Logan gymnasium as Hobart TORCHED the Ingots 69-28!! WOW - lock down D-D-D-DEFENSE combined with some timely execution on the offensive end led to Hobart securing their 8th victory of the year! Banjoff was again THE MAN as he lit up River for 22 points! Classmate Tyler Schultz poured in 15 more as our boys defeated the Ingots for the 16th time in their last 18 tries!
This will be another busy week for the Brickie cagers with games Tuesday, Friday (HOMECOMING & SENIOR NIGHT), and Saturday! Currently 8-9 on the year, Hobart has 5 games remaining before MARCH MADNESS begins!

I guess you could say they were vegetarians because they had no "meet" last week? :)
Maybe not, but they were still hard at WORK WORK WORK during practice to hit the century mark as a team score.
