Instructor Spotlight
Edwin Culver
Ed was born and raised in Connecticut. This is his third year at SIG, where he is currently teaching "Deriving" into Pre-Calculus, Engineering in Action, and Time Travel and Black Holes. He has earned BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering . His main areas of interest in engineering were fluid dynamics, the flow of fluids, and thermodynamics, how heat can be turned into work. After many years in the world of aerospace engineering and software development, he attended Southern Connecticut State University to earn his teaching certificate. His goals are to get students interested in science, especially learning the processes of science. For hobbies, he takes his dog swimming, bicycles, and badly plays table tennis and tennis.
Martha Dumas
Martha Dumas has worked at SIG Yale every summer since 2011. She’s taught What’s Your Point? (a debate course); College Prep; The Writer’s Word Palette; Facts, Stats & Studies; and the two courses she’s teaching this summer—Word Origins for SAT Success and Writing Matters. She has a bachelor’s degree in comparative literature from William Smith College and a master’s in English language and literature from Trinity College in Hartford. During the year she teaches writing at the University of New Haven, gives tours of the Mark Twain House, and is a book editor…all the while looking forward to a new group of students at SIG.
Tyler Peterhansel
Tyler is teaching Environmental Engineering: Design for Sustainability this summer at SIG. He majored in chemistry at Cornell University and also worked in a lab studying redox regulation pathways in the mammalian cell. After joining Teach for America program he just finished his third year teaching chemistry, biology, and health science at Metropolitan Business Academy in New Haven. "This is my first summer working at SIG and I enjoy the opportunity to interact with talented students from all over the world."
Meet our Housemasters
Kathryn Mill (2nd left), is serving as our other Housemaster for girls. A former SIG student, Kathryn is always eager to return to SIG every year. A graduate of Champlain College, she majored in Professional Writing and International Studies. Currently she attends the Monterea Institute of International Studies and majors in International Education Management. Kathryn is also serving as an Instructor this session, teaching Creative Connections. Outside of the classroom Kathryn enjoys board games, writing and photography. Kathryn takes care of business here, she is always on top of things making sure that nothing is left undone.
John Alzatae (2nd right) is a native of Montclair, New Jersey. A graduate of Dartmouth College where he majored in Journalism. During the year he is a Site Dean for an Educational non-profit organization. In his 2nd year with SIG, he has a dual role this year. In addition to serving as Housemaster he is also teaching Global Science. In his spare time he enjoys playing soccer, taking road trips and rock climbing. John is always willing to fill in any role he can to ensure the program runs smoothly. You can often find him with a smile on his face.
You all had the chance to meet Suhbi Matariyeh (right) in our last newsletter! Subhi teaches middle students Roots of Human Behavior here at SIG. With Bachelor of Science Degree, Suhbi says that teaching is his "dream job." When Suhbi isn't in the classroom he enjoys sports most. Basketball, baseball and bowling are his favorite hobbies.
