Amanda Moore Elementary School
August/September 2018 Chalkboard News
Principal Note
August 23, 2018
Dear Amanda Moore Families,
It is that time again! Back to school!! Those words bring so many different emotions to people. Excitement, fear, anxiety, hope, relief, stress, optimism, to name a few. I enjoy reading my Facebook news feed and seeing posts which reflect the different emotions. Some say, “tag teachers, you’re it”, while others say things like, “I’ll miss bonfires and barefoot blue jean nights”. I want to continue our focus on positivity and fun by offering the suggestion of excitement and positive emotions surrounding the upcoming school year. I for one am very excited to welcome the students and staff back to Amanda Moore. I look forward to seeing all their smiling faces and observing another year of growth and learning! It doesn’t mean I won’t miss the summer weather, time with family or the lack of structure, it just means I’m ready for the next season to begin.
Over the summer I was able to continue my New Year Resolution to read more. The #AMES2018Books campaign continued and I read several books on leadership and some for entertainment as well. Check out my Twitter @RogerBennett34 or my Facebook page Principal Bennett, to see the books I read. Don’t forget to keep posting your books on Twitter and Facebook by adding #AMES2018Books so we can see all the books read by Amanda Moore students, staff and parents.
We will continue our relentless pursuit of continuous improvement. This year you can expect to see a continued commitment to foundational literacy skills and a balanced literacy approach to ELA instruction. Classroom leveled reading libraries continue to improve as teachers and the district continue to add materials, which are essential for meeting the needs of each student. We will continue to focus on teaching conceptual understanding of mathematics, which will help our students understand mathematics more thoroughly. The staff will continue to utilize cooperative learning, technology, physical movement, feedback and other high leverage strategies within instruction.
Romeo Community Schools addressed the desperate need for mental health support at the elementary school level by hiring two additional school social workers. Many of our students struggle with stress, fear, anxiety, depression, and social skills. Our new district social workers will allow for an increase in social work services here at Amanda Moore from one day last year up to 3 days this year with additional support available on the two off days as needed. This additional support will have a tremendous impact on our students in need of those services, as well as those who are not in need of those services by helping proactively intervene with students so that extreme behaviors and other crises are reduced and averted.
Our updated parent/student handbook is available on-line at www.romeok12.org under Amanda Moore Elementary School and then click on “For Parents and Students”. Please take the time to read the handbook with your child prior to the start of the school year. If you do require a physical copy of the handbook, please contact Ms. LoGrasso and a copy will be printed for you.
We at Amanda Moore are looking forward to another great year of empowering ALL students to succeed!

Academics, learning style, behavior, and social interactions were all factored into the classroom and teacher assignments. These assignments are complex and can have an impact on multiple students. Therefore, all assignments are final and will not be changed. If your child was registered for Amanda Moore Elementary School after the office closed in June, class assignments were based on section enrollment and balanced classrooms. Those teacher placements will be shared with those families via phone call on Monday, August 27th.

COMMUNICATION
We are a Michigan Certified Green School and we earned that designation by doing our part to reduce, reuse and recycle. Part of our efforts to “reduce” has led us to be a paperless school. At this point, this will only be new to families who are joining us for the first time this school year. You will receive limited paper communication from the Amanda Moore Elementary School office. You will receive nearly all important school information via your email. In addition to email, we have an active Facebook page where you will find pictures, videos and event reminders posted frequently. We currently have 420 followers, which is up over 100 followers from last year at this time. We would love to have every parent at Amanda Moore follow our Facebook page so they can see all the great things that happen here. Click on the hyperlink to check out our page. ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL
Please use the southwest lot/driveway to drop off your child for school and please do not use the bus loop area to drop off students. When using the parking lot, please follow these simple rules.
1. Drive slowly and safely.
2. If you need to park, it MUST be in a parking spot. Parking spots are available throughout the lot and the adjacent basketball courts.
3. To drop off without exiting your vehicle (because if you as the driver exit the vehicle
that is known as parking), pull up along the sidewalk as far as possible and have your child/ren ONLY exit from the passenger side directly onto the sidewalk. Once your child/ren have safely exited the vehicle, you can pull out to make room for other vehicles.
Please watch this student made video to help better understand the parking lot expectations.
NOON DUTY EMPLOYMENT
Are you interested in helping out in our cafeteria every day from 10:55 a.m. to 12:25 p.m.? Visit our district website and apply. We are always looking for parents to help supervise and assist our students at lunch and recess. Even if you can only fill in once in a while as a substitute, please apply! Apply Here
ABSENCE CALL-IN/EMAIL
Please contact the office to notify the school if your child will be absent. Contact Ms. LoGrasso in the main office by calling the attendance Line at 586-752-0261 or emailing dee.lograsso@romeok12.org. Please do not call the main office number to report your child’s absence. We need to keep that line open for emergencies and other time sensitive communication. Thank you.
Green School Environmental Tip
Earth Friendly Landscaping
When landscaping your yard, you can protect your kids, pets, and the environment from harm. Use pesticides sparingly. Put mulch around trees and plants. Water your lawn only when it needs it and choose plants native to Michigan. Once established, they will tolerate dry weather and resist disease.
