PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Bonny Slope Families,
What a fun and busy start to 2023 we’ve had! Not only are classes diving deep into learning, but teachers are assessing students to find out what they are at mid-year. Mid-year progress reports will go home to families in just two weeks.
Along with their classroom learning, our students are engaged in OBOB (Oregon Battle of the Books), Geo Club, Bobcat Academy, Assembly preparation and a myriad of other activities. And, field trips have started! Please watch for updates from your teacher on the permission forms and parent volunteer needs we have for those.
This week I shared with our staff that our PreK program will be moving to Hazeldale Elementary School beginning next school year. At this time, BSD is no longer offering a tuition based PreK program and only 8% of our current PreK students live in our boundary. The goal is to create a PreK program in all of our Title I schools, and Hazeldale fits that model. We will miss the joy they bring, but know that Hazeldale is eager to welcome them.
Thanks to those who were able to join our Principal Chat this week. We value your time and input. Please reach out to us if you have a specific topic you’d like addressed in the future.
My Best,
Cary Meier
Principal
STUDENT SUCCESS CORNER
This month our Kindness In the Classroom concept is inclusiveness. Inclusiveness is including others, inviting them in, and welcoming them with open arms. Ultimately, we hope to connect the concepts in this unit back to respect and caring, which were the first two units in our Kindness In the Classroom curriculum.
Here’s a peek into what each grade level is doing in this unit. In kindergarten the focus is on exploring inclusiveness through the lens of kindness by treating others fairly and including them. This unit also incorporates the idea of being special, unique, and one of a kind and why we can be proud of our differences. In first grade they are learning about what makes each of us special in our own unique way, using kindness to include others every day, and practicing cooperation as a method of including others. In second grade they have been discussing what makes two things the same and what makes them different. Their work has also been on understanding the difference between include and exclude, exploring how fairness contributes to inclusiveness and evaluating the connection between kindness and inclusiveness. Our third graders have been highlighting similarities among classmates regardless of preconceived notions of differences. In addition their conversations and work have been about exploring the difference between fair and equal. In fourth grade students are learning what it means to be inclusive of others but also what it means to work to include themselves, especially in situations where it feels like they are being left out. This unit also covers the concepts of friendship, teamwork, and fairness, and gives students another opportunity to exercise their empathy skills in determining how to make situations fair and equal for everyone. Finally, our fifth graders have been evaluating different situations for how fair and equitable they are, two concepts that are important to understand and look for in everyday life. Having a fair and equitable world will be the work of all of us. Learning more about the concept of inclusiveness has been relevant and important for us all. ♥️

Car Drop-off Safety
There have been some reports of unsafe driving near our crosswalk on McDaniel during drop off in the morning. We know there can be a lot of congestion during that time, but ask that families remain patient and proceed with caution as we have staff and students in the crosswalk that we need to keep safe.
Please stay on the road, and avoid using the shoulder to go around cars that are waiting to turn left into the parking lot. It poses a serious risk to our staff and students that are in the crosswalk, but not visible because the car waiting to turn is blocking the view.
Also, when waiting for car line pick up, please do not park or wait in no parking areas, as this is dangerous for our neighbors. Thank you!
SAVE THE DATE
The theme this year is "Come Curious: Building Racial Literacy Together". During this year's event, we will once again center on student voice and their experience in school and the community.

Opt-out Information for State Tests
Later this winter and in the spring, we will begin administering Oregon's statewide assessments. These tests include:
English language proficiency tests (ELPA) for students receiving ELD services
English Language Arts and Mathematics summative tests for students in grades 3-5
Science summative tests for students in grade 5
These tests provide a snapshot of your student’s progress, help the school as well as the district identify groups of students that may need additional supports, and provide information to the state which is used to make funding decisions.
If you do NOT want your student to take the English Language Arts or Math assessment tests, please complete the opt-out form at the bottom of this page. For Science or English language proficiency tests, a separate form requesting exemption based on either religion or disability is also located at the bottom of this page. These forms should be turned into your student’s school before testing begins and are only valid for the 2022-23 school year. If you have any questions about state testing, please contact our assistant principal, Betty Skundrick.
