Thelma Jones Elementary Week of Aug. 31st to Sept. 4th
How many staff members do you recognize in our 20-21 staff picture? We have a new addition to our family, can you tell where they are?
Greetings Shark Families!!
We are excited to be into our third week of the school year. Thank you for your patience as we continue to establish routines and norms. Please know that we are here to work with you through any situations that may arise.
Technology requests are still being processed by the MISD technology department. Once your request is processed, they will deliver your device to the school and we will contact you regarding pickup. In order to receive technology, you need to have completed the MISD online form requesting a device.
In partnership,
Mrs. Rhines

Virtual School Norms
After a few days in our Virtual Learning Environment, we need your help to ensure that our classroom expectations, etiquette, and norms are being followed by our students while they are learning at home.
While we know that the home learning environment is not the same as in school, we want to replicate as much as we can.
Classes are split with time in live class, and time in independent work (with the teacher available to help). The bullet points below are addressing the "live class" portion of each class.
Please read the following and discuss with your child:
· Students' Learning Environments should be in a quiet place with a desk or a table for their device and other supplies. They should be sitting upright in a chair so they can actively listen and participate.
· Please be mindful of the learning environment, in your home, to prevent students from hearing and seeing things that may not be appropriate for young ears and eyes.
· School hours are 8:00-3:30.
· Attendance is taken daily. Texas laws regarding attendance are being followed. As always, please communicate with us if there is an illness or extenuating circumstance that prevents attendance to school. You may email their teacher or contact our PEIMS clerk at hildakhazem@misdmail.org to keep everyone up to date.
· All students are expected to be dressed in school-appropriate attire and ready for the day to begin at 8:00.
· Students are expected to be actively engaged and to follow the classroom rules, expectations and procedures at all times.
· Microphones should be muted unless called on by the teacher. Please make sure conversations in the chat are appropriate.
· Parents, please remember that this is the teacher's classroom. We appreciate your involvement in your child's learning, but the teacher is in charge of that classroom and should be the only adult interacting with the students and the students should only be interacting with the teacher.
Yearbooks have arrived! We will have yearbook pickup August 31st and September 1st and 2nd during school business hours. 8-3:30 p.m. Parents who ordered a yearbook will receive a verification call from the school.

How to Prepare Your Student for the Changes at School
We are here to support you as you begin to explain to your child what going back to school in the building may look like.
Some things to touch on:
- Discuss the fact that staff members and some students will wear masks. I would also make sure that they know how important it is not to make fun of someone else or tease them about a mask.
- Discuss that students will not be sitting right next to each other. There will be distance between one another at all times. If you have already experienced this somewhere (grocery store line, etc.), you could remind your child about what that was like. Another idea is to show them at home what social distance looks like.
- Discuss that it will be very important to follow directions. We will work as a school campus to teach what it looks like when we _____________________. We will work every day to review procedures and take time to explain and show how.
- You should probably prepare your child by letting him/her know that you will not be able to eat lunch with them or walk them in to the building. Help them understand MISD has put this procedure in place to reduce the number of visitors who enter the building.
- Let your child know that we will help them with whatever they need.
- Please make sure your child has good hand-washing procedures in place.
Even though it is difficult right now, I strongly advise staying positive and hopeful in front of your child. They are watching you and listening to you.
