Using New Media To Build Literacy
Learning Kindergarten Sight Words
Dream Text Project

The ultimate goal of reading is to construct meaning. My dream text project aimed at helping students to automatically read and spell the most frequent used words.
Screen Cast
Within each lesson I used a screen cast to help my students and parents understand what my expectations were. These helped students to understand the directions of each lesson and gave them a visual to help them understand what it would look like.
Google Form
This form was created to help students learn beginning letters by listening to the beginning sounds of their sight words. This form could also be used as a form of assessment. By submitting their answers I can get an idea of how they are doing.

Literacy is the building block upon which learning begins. When students cannot read fluently it will limit their comprehension and ultimately affect all content areas. Fontas and Pinnell introduced guided reading in 1996 as a way to better meet the needs of every student. By differentiating your instruction they believe there are many ways to reach students. Fluency is given close attention in the F&P reading systems. They believe that fluent readers are able to read orally with speed, accuracy, and with expression. By knowing sight words automatically students are able to better their fluency which will increase their comprehension.

Technology is a great way for students who are learning high frequency words to be actively involved. It allows students to manipulate letters, use voice/sound controls, highlight and animate. Because writing also falls under the literacy umbrella it is important to have fluent writers. With technology constantly advancing the idea of "new literacies" has evolved.
Lucy Caulkins recommends to anchor high frequency words means to: practice looking at words, study it, make a mental picture, write it down, check it and if a student forgets a word, have a word wall in the classroom for a reference.
Technology has allowed new ways of teaching reading and writing. When teachers use technology in an effective way, students will find ways to identify high frequency words more quickly.
