LMC News
Hello from the LMC!
Students have a variety of opportunities to read through the school library this year. The Library Media Center has paper books, magazines and playaways as well as digital ebooks, audiobooks and digital magazines available to high school students via Sora/Overdrive, Destiny Discover, Flipster and Junior Library Guild.
Students will be utilizing our library catalog Destiny Discover to place books on hold, rather than pulling books off of the shelves themselves. This practice will keep browsing contactless to avoid the spread of potential germs. Destiny Discover is available on any device, whether at school or at home, from the LMC webpage: https://www.ecsdnet.org/programs-support/evansville-high-school.cfm .
LMC staff will deliver available books that were put on hold to TRIE classes once per week for in-person students. Fully virtual students can pick-up their books at scheduled resource pick-up dates/times. Returned books will be quarantined for a minimum of 4 days before other students are able to use them based on research by the American Library Association.
Please also, remember to return books and materials from last school year. Middle School materials can be returned to the high school for 9th graders. Returning materials promptly helps keep everything equitably accessible to our entire student body. Thank you!
If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. We look forward to a great year!

FFA NEWS
The Evansville FFA hosted the annual Pork Loin Sandwich sale in conjunction with the Rock County Dairy Trailer's fall finale. The fundraiser was a huge success as we sold out of pork in two hours! We are looking forward to our FFA Chapter Officer Workshop and virtual World Dairy Expo competitions coming up.
DEPARTMENT NEWS
Agriculture
The Agriscience Classes have been hard at work demonstrating knowledge and skills through hands on learning opportunities. The Wildlife Class studied freshwater fish and took a fishing trip out to Gibbs Lake. They have also begun their taxidermy projects. The Greenhouse students have been getting the greenhouse set up and ready to go for some hydroponic vegetable and herb production this winter. They also completed a soil texture lab that included ribboning soil. The Food Science, Technology, and Processing students just finished making soda using yeast and the fermentation process. They will be fermenting vegetables and canning salsa next week.
Intro to Vet Science
Students are working on learning about how to properly do physical exams on pets like dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. Students are getting hands on experience practicing their skills by performing physical exams on the classroom pets.
Exploring Agriculture
Students are wrapping up their cattle unit. We have learned about both dairy and beef cattle. This week students will be making beef jerky to finish off the unit.
Ag Business
Students are starting to develop their own personal business plan. Students will be building on this business throughout the quarter as we learn more about the various duties and tasks of being a business owner.
ART
Mr. Riel and Ms. Rick are excited about the engagement of students and cannot wait to get the completed artwork up in the halls for everyone to see. Our yearbook is also underway but we need help from the Evansville community. Since our usual after school activities, such as sports and clubs, are not how they used to be, we need your help getting photographs! Please go to the EHS website, click the "About" tab, and then the "Yearbook" tab to find all the information yearbook related. Here you will also find information about the Yearbook Snap app or how to upload your own photos right through our school website. Your photos might just end up in our 2020-2021 yearbook!
ENGLISH
English class is empathy class. Can you think of a more important and universal skill? Regardless of what your student plans to do in life, the ability to honestly understand and connect to others will serve them. Nothing builds empathy like a book. In shows and movies, things happen TO people. In books, we get to “Quantum Leap” ourselves into another person’s life, in another place, in another time, and understand that they are just like us. That is pure magic. Can you think of a more important thing to a young person in 2020? How desperate are students to feel understanding, acceptance, and belonging? How much does the modern world and technology make us feel the opposite? Help them connect with each other, themselves, and the world around them by giving them a book! Help them connect by unplugging!
FACS
We are off to a great start in Family & Consumer/Health Science department! Students in Child Development are learning essential parenting skills through the Real Care Baby simulation. Students in Nutrition & Wellness are just finishing up the Safety & Sanitation unit. We are so happy to be in school and loving the opportunity to be together!
MATH
Hooray for EHS AP Calculus Students !
What a crazy start to a new school year. Trying to do Calculus virtually has been “unpleasant” at best. I need to congratulate the students on their patience and perseverance through this really, really difficult time. Fortunately, I think we have turned the corner and the course activities should be much smoother from now on. If you have a student enrolled in AP Calculus (or probably any students in any classroom this year), give them a pat on the back. They deserve it.
MUSIC
Greetings from the EHS Music Department!
Things look different in the music department than in years' past, but we're making, writing, and listening to music in a multitude of ways.
Choir students have been singing songs about resilience and rising above challenges in life, which ties into a unit relating to tolerance and social justice. Students also picked a topic of interest to research and present to the class relating to tolerance which included ability, bullying/bias, class, immigration, gender/sexual identity, and rights/activism.
Students in band haven't been able to play their band instruments in their class yet - we're still waiting on the bell covers and masks that were ordered before school started- but they are still making music! We spend a lot of class listening to and watching performances in assorted genres of music, from jazz to pop to marching band to classical. In addition, some students are working on composing music, researching music technology, analyzing movie musicals, or various other projects. We've also spent time honing our ensemble skills (simultaneous listening and playing, interpreting rhythms, keeping a steady beat together) while drumming on buckets. Students recently finished writing short composition patterns, and we are currently performing some of them in class. We're hoping our bell covers and masks come soon so we can play on our own instruments in class!
Do you have an unused keyboard at home? The music department is looking for keyboards to lend to students throughout the year for our Beginning Piano class so each student has something they can practice on at home while learning virtually. If you have a keyboard you would be willing to lend or donate to the school, please contact Amanda Leahy at leahya@evansville.k12.wi.us.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION WEBSITE:
SCIENCE
Science has been in full swing at EHS this past month. Physical science students have done many hands-on activities and labs surrounding our first unit on motion and forces. We have looked at Newton’s Laws, the Law of Conservation of Momentum, and Conservation of Energy. During unit two, our focus has shifted to machines, work, and potential / kinetic energy. The classroom has been filled with ramps, balloon ziplines, carts, pulley systems, and levers.
Students in Applied Topics in Science have learned about ecosystem dynamics in their first unit and are now learning about water issues on both the local and global levels. Designing their own experiment using ‘Fast Plants’ has been one of our long-term projects, as well as looking at decomposition rates in several of the world’s biomes that we have mimicked in plastic tubs. Recently ATS students have performed several water tests for nitrates, phosphates, pH, and D.O. levels in samples from Lake Leota, Allen Creek, and the EHS pond. Students get to take a field trip to the Evansville Wastewater Treatment Facility this coming week to see where our water goes once we flush the toilet. Good thing we will be wearing masks!
The EHS science department is taking on the new year with its new challenges. We have been incorporating application-based science activities by mixing projects in the classroom with virtual activities for students at home. Some of our classroom projects have included working in our outdoor and indoor labs, along with our STEAM work areas. One of our first projects was to 3D print and assemble face shields. These shields do not take the place of chemistry goggles, but they do help us keep the kids safe when we are in the lab area. If you have any questions about these activities or resources, please contact Ms. Stalder, Ms. Marlin, Ms. Messling, or Mr. Benson
SOCIAL STUDIES
The Economics classes returned to yesteryear with a little sidewalk chalk as they were learning about Supply and Demand. Students have been studying what causes overall shifts of supply or demand curves. In order to switch the lesson up, they went outside armed with sidewalk chalk, ready to tackle different market scenarios and the corresponding shift in supply or demand. The activity provided a nice reprieve from the pandemic laden lessons of the classroom. Take a look at the handiwork generated by some of our juniors and seniors.
SPANISH
Our Spanish I class just completed our first unit on getting acquainted! We spent time on pronunciation (ask your student to roll their rs or pronounce the ll in Spanish!), greeting each other, appreciating the meaning of learning a second language and learning how to describe ourselves by answering the question, 'Who am I?' As we begin Unit Two, we will learn about families, words to describe families and how all of our families are influenced by cultural factors.
Our Spanish II class just completed a comprehensive review of grammar, vocabulary and skills learned in Spanish I. While going through the extensive review, we developed the confidence and ability to have live video conversational exchanges in Spanish to get to know our classmates better and share information about ourselves using question words, adjectives, verb conjugations and likes and dislikes. As we begin Unit Two, we will expand or conversations and learning to begin looking at how cultural factors influence the homes we live in.
Spanish III is wrapping up learning about holidays and celebrations in the Spanish Speaking world. They researched and presented on a holiday of their choice, and have been talking to their classmates about how these celebrations compare to celebrations in their own family and community. Next, we will start exploring the uses of an entirely new mood, the subjunctive.
AP Spanish students are working extremely hard to improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening to Spanish. They have been reading authentic newspaper and magazine articles, listening to native speaker converse on a variety of topics, and even having debates among themselves. They are also learning to write persuasive essays and formal emails in Spanish, make cultural comparisons on the fly, and practicing their conversation skills.
The first month of school has flown by and we look forward to watching the students continue to learn and grow!
