Hello RHK8 Families,
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Thursday night's K-5 Back-to-School Night. We hope it helped you know more about our school, our strengths, and what is new this year. Our teachers appreciated connecting with families and having the opportunity to share important details about student learning this year. We look forward to the 6th-8th grade Back-to-School Night, which will be at 6:00pm on September 17. Here's the News for this week.
September 5 Early Release - Professional Growth Wednesday
On Wednesday afternoon this week, our teachers and staff examined and analyzed our 2017-2018 performance data in reading, math, science, attendance, and other areas. Staff worked in small groups first predicting, next observing and noticing, and then making inferences based on the data. We noticed many strengths evident in the data, while also noting areas for growth and improvement. Additionally, we generated possible next steps to build on these strengths and to address needed growth areas. Collaborating to analyze student data, reflect, and develop ways to grow are essential to our continual improvement as educators.
Each Wednesday afternoon our teachers and staff collaborate and engage in professional development. Sometimes we meet as a whole staff and often teachers meet in smaller teams. Some of what we do includes selecting and studying effective instructional strategies, developing lessons and units, creating and scoring assessments, monitoring and evaluating results, analyzing student data, reflecting, engaging in professional book studies, and working in grade level or content-alike teams. We value and appreciate having Wednesday afternoons, and we are confident that this time together helps us to be highly skilled educators who can grow student learning.
Thank You for Prioritizing Attendance
There are many ways for parents to be involved, and one key way is to value your child's attendance. Research shows that there's a link between school attendance and how well students do in school. Here at RHK8, each student brings an important voice, perspective, and experience to our learning community. Making sure your child has consistent attendance makes an important difference. We appreciate your efforts to schedule vacations, appointments, and other events outside of the school days, as well as trying to minimize absence.

Scrip
What is the SCRIP program? How does it work?
SCRIP is a fundraising program that earns money for our school at no extra cost to you! SCRIP works by buying Scrip gift cards/certificates to purchase everything ---groceries, lunches/dinners, clothing, shoes, entertainment, home goods, books, car washes and so on. Our school earns money with every Scrip card purchase.
The more families participate, the more money RHS earns, which equates to more money RHS PTO has to spend on various activities, programs, classroom materials and so on within the school, as well as outside the school, such as field trips.
- SCRIP orders are due Tues. (9/11) — due by 9am, and orders are returned by Thurs. (9/13)
- Send in the attached order form with payment by check (pay to: RHS PTO) or cash or credit card (http://www.raleighhillspto.org/rhs-store.html)
- PLEASE INSTRUCT YOUR CHILD TO GIVE THE SCRIP ORDER TO MS. JULIE or MS. DEBBI IN THE OFFICE AT THE START OF THE DAY

Reminders will be sent out via email and Facebook. Please send me an email or a text message
(jeannielv@comcast.net / jeannievdz@gmail.com or 503-706-8735) if you want to be added to the email list or have any questions.
It’s EASY! It’s CONVENIENT! And, it WORKS!
I look forward to seeing many of you at next Wednesday's volunteer fair and at Friday's Carnival. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy your weekend.
Sincerely,
Peter
